I see the term "unique" being thrown around here a lot for top 10 names (rather an oxymoron). Here are some now-uncommon, lovely names with a history (name, nicknames, origin, meaning):
Miriam (Mimi). Hebrew form of Mary.
Elizabeth (Eliza, Liza, Lisa, Liz, Beth, Betty, Betsy
). Derived from Greek, from Hebrew. "My god is abundance" or "my god is oath" *shrug*
Annika (Ani. My boyfriend's sister is Annika, aka Nicci.) . Dutch, German, Swedish, etc form of Anna. Favor or grace.
Eleanor (Elle, Ella, Nora - I love them all!). French.
Adelaide (Addie). Noble sort.
Octavia. Latin. Eighth.
Carmen. Really, worldly.
Diana. Everywhere. Goddess, heaven.
August/Augustine/Augustus (Gus?). Latin. Great.
Oscar. English, Irish, Spanish. Deer lover (
Celio. Spanish. Heaven.
Dominic. Latin. Of the Lord.
Edmund. English, German. Protector.
Julian Marcus. Andrew Thomas. Michael anything.
Isabella Simone. Genevieve Amalia. Alexandra Katharine. Lucia Elizabeth.
