When Ayden was first born and couldn't move around much at night, we put him in the crib, and then pulled the covers up to mid chest and then stretched the covers tight across him and tucked them into the edges of the crib matriss so it was nice and snug. Once he started moving around though there really isn't much you can do to keep the blankets in place and I think a thin blanket is fine, or you can get one of those... i can't remember what they are called, but it's like a blanket/overall set that you zip baby up in. Ayden hated that, and soon started to hate covers. He will hardly even let me put a sheet on him now...
