I haven't done it in ages but from what I remember, I think the important thing was to change the layer mode to multiply, which makes the text transparent. If you want it colourless as well, you reduce the fill opacity (on the blending options dialogue) to 0% and add a 1px black stroke to make it stand out. I hope that answers your question!
