I had my first major contraction at 10:02 pm on July 10th (2006). I remember the time because it was funny since that was the exact time of the apex of the full moon. Around midnight we called my parents and they arrived with my aunt at 2. Around 4 we called my midwife and she and the assistant go there about 4:30. I was still doing okay with "singing" through the contractions. About 7 things were more intense. My whole labor was back labor. Awful. I could tell the baby was not positioned well, too. Around 7:30 the assistant convinced me to get in the shower. I was in there a few minutes and got back out since the contractions were unbearable in there and the water made it worse.

I had a really long, weird contraction around 8 am. I felt the baby push off the top of my uterus, rotate around, and enter the birth canal. After all that back labor he finally got in the right position! I told my midwife what I thought had happened. She said to check myself and see so I did. Soon after my water broke. I had no urge to push but I knew the baby was in the birth canal and I knew if I pushed it would be over sooner. So I tried pushing sitting up, on my hands and knees (ouch!), and on my side. I delivered the baby while on my side at 8:34 am after about 20 minutes of pushing.

First of all we were extremely surprised that Fritz was a "he." We had been convinced he was a "she." He weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces and was 20 inches long. In attendance at his birth were the midwife and her assistant (the midwife is also a friend of mine and the assistant I had met many times socially as well), my parents, my two big kids, my aunt, and my husband. My aunt (who is 68 and gives elder care and so has midwifed many people in death, but had never watched a birth) is still on a birth high and is so thankful I allowed her to be there. Particularly because Fritz is named after my mother's father who was my aunt's brother.
