Bed sharing

This angers me. SIDS will happen no matter where baby sleeps, it is NOT tied to bed sharing. Ugh why must media make cosleeping out to be so harmful and instill fear in parents!?

Despite dangers, bed-sharing on the rise

I called the pedi yesterday about Isabel's apnea. She wasn't there and the nurse seemed more concerned that we were bed sharing than that Isabel stopped breathing :( I told them I wouldn't have known if she hadn't been next to me and that studies have shown that co sleeping REDUCES the risk of SIDS.

Yeah, it's annoying and I think the AAP is behind the curve on this one. I'm sure they'll figure it out eventually. An underappreciated issue with the data is how deliberate the cosleeping is and whether safe sleep practices are followed. Obviously I shouldn't be lumped in with an exhausted sleep deprived mom passing out with baby on a glider or couch but that's where a lot of these accidental death statistics come from IMO.

Re: Bed sharing

Ill admit...these articles continue to freak me out.

We are absolutely planned bed sharers. I set up my space to accommodate both of us safely. I believe it's good for baby and for me. I really do think it's just as safe, or safer, than other sleeping arrangements.

But, they hit that nerve...the same one that makes me jumpy about parking lot safety, pools, etc. I can reduce all the risks I can, but it still scares me that something *could* happen. Ugh.

I wish they would just stop publishing "studies" that don't begin to estimate any real risk of safe cosleeping. There are so many factors and it seems that studies only hash out one or two. And negate important safety measures.

When are people going to stop using SIDS and suffocation interchangeably? They are so obviously not the same!
