Do YOU have a name horror story?

I loved my name when I was younger because absolutely nobody else had it except the pop start I was named after. As I got older I realized what kind of person she was and started using a nickname.

My name?

Madonna. No lies.

Memi June 27th, 2012 02:06 PM

My name is so obnoxiously common and unspecial to me that ive never been Fond of it. That's why I prefer unique names that arent overly used. I'm sad that my top girls name and DS' name have gotten so common in recent years. It's caused an internal struggle for me bc they have deep family roots and meaning but I can't get over how popular they've become :((

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

I'm named Johnna for my Grandda (and all the other John grandda's before me) and my oldest brother's name is you guessed it...John. Very confusing. Which is why the nickname Nana has come to be :p

But I've learned to love my name through the years.

I am the first of the tital wave of Nicoles and that has been a drag. However I was cvalled Nikki by my family until... Prince came out with the Song Darling Nikki. Even as an adult I find the lyrics pornographic and disgusting and then Teh Foo Fighters redid the song.

I was so humiliated I hated my name and the teasing.

Because we are adults here I am posting the lyrics

I knew a girl named Nikki
I guess you could say she was a s e x fiend
I met her in a hotel lobby
Masturbating with a magazine
She said, "How'd you like to waste some time?"
And I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind

She took me to her castle
And I just couldn't believe my eyes
She had so many devices
Everything that money could buy
She said, "Sign your name on the dotted line"
The lights went out and Nikki started to grind
Nikki

The castle started spinning
Or maybe it was my brain
I can't tell you what she did to me
[ From: DARLING NIKKI Lyrics - PRINCE ]
But me body will never be the same

Her lovin' will kick your behind
Oh, she'll show you no mercy
But she'll sho'nuff, sho'nuff
Show you how to grind
Darling Nikki, oh

Woke up the next morning Nikki wasn't there
I looked all over and all I found
Was a phone number on the stairs
It said, "Thank you for a funky time
Call me up whenever you want to grind"
Oh, Nikki, oh

Oh come back Nikki, come back
Your dirty little Prince wanna grind, grind, grind, grind
Grind, grind, grind, grind, grind!

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

Oh, wow, Nicole. I can see why that would bother you.

I don't have a "horror" story, but my experience was the exact opposite of Megan's.

Growing up I never met any other kids with my name and sometimes I wondered if it wasn't a good/pretty name if none of the other kids had it. NO ONE ever spelled it correctly and often did not pronounce it correctly - and I hated that. I have been called:
Jayna (a lot and I hate that one)
Jenna (a lot)
Gina
Jennifer

So, I am more attracted to baby names for my kids that are more common - or at least people know how to spell them when they hear them and know how to pronounce them when they see them.

I didn't really care for my name growing up but I have come to like it more in adulthood.....but not enough to give my children more unique names.

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

I knew a Janna in high school. Seems pretty straighforward to pronounce to me. I could see how people would think Jenna though if they skimmed over your name quickly.

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

My name (Kalynn said Kay-lynn) was fairly unique, but like some of you impossible to say/spell. I hated it and only ever met boys with the same name as me (but even they were few and far between) As a kid I was embarrassed at school when teachers would brutally butcher my name! Now I LOVE my own name. It is unique, but gaining in popularity. (my parent's claim they made it up- and their story makes sense but all the Kalynn's out there older than me would disagree) I appreciate having a name that not everyone else out there has, and one that has never been referenced in any story/song/movie... there really aren't any negative connotations!

My name is Makiah...like "Mariah" but with a k...not that anyone has ever figured that out on their own...lol. It was always frustrating and annoying. Also it has no meaning, according to a name registry my mom tried to get a plaque from for me with my name origin/meaning/etc. (as well as every other name website I've ever seen)

Yes nothing like my 14 year old son and 3 year old daughter singing darling Nikki as a duet. I cannot believe that it was on the radio, Thanks Foo Fighters.

I remember when I was working at a government document place, I was filing teacher's certificates, and there was one with first name of Shart. It was a female too.

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

SHART???? OMG. I've always hated my name...Jennifer. I was always always always 1 of at least 3-5 Jennifers in every class. Hated Jenny, Jenna etc. Only go by Jen by default b/c what else is there really. Makes me SOOO paranoid now when naming my daugthers. Don't want anything too popular, dated, trendy...don't want something on the upswing in case it takes off and becomes a Jennifer. Gah.

No name horror stories but I am in the had the number one name the year I was born (Michelle) so I now want my children to have less common names camp.

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

Surprisingly, I didn't have any horror stories, despite having a stripper/alcoholic drink as a name (Brandi). I got more slack for going by Dani when I switched names when I was 10ish. I heard the song "Danny Boy" in high school a lot lol

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

My initials were BJ growing up (my maiden name). You can imagine how the boys liked to bring that up in high school...For that reason I'm careful about initials. We avoided using my favorite middle name for my son because he would have been RAT.

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

My name is Reba. I am actually named after one of my mom's cousins, but people always assume I am named after Reba McEntire. It doesn't help that my original hair color was red. I dyed it blonde and haven't heard so many references to it since.

Sometimes people will also assume that 'Reba' is a nickname for Rebecca. I know it can be, but in my case it's not.

Re: Do YOU have a name horror story?

My name was extremely unique when I was growing up. All my life, I have only ever known one other Anissa. I hated it. Nobody could ever pronounce it, spell it, or remember it. It was a constant PITA. I go by Ani (like Annie), but even with that, people question if it is actually pronounced that way, and I'm still struggling to correct people with my name.

I cringe when I hear people say they want to give their kids "different" names, or they want to give their kids regular names, but then spell it differently. I totally understand wanting to stear away from trendy or here-and-now names, but I don't like it when they go in opposite direction. Just my own experience, but I didn't feel like my parents did me any favors. LOL

No, my name (Lucy) was pretty common growing up. But when I was about 5 or 6 some boy in my class heard my brother call me "Lu" and so for the rest of my primary school life I heard a bunch of toilet jokes (loo is another name for toilet)

Growing up I only knew of one Jacob so when I named my son that I didn't realize how popular it had become and even though I still love the name I kinda wish I would have choose something different.
