Does in have too much baggage here in the States?

Would you name your daughter Jemima

Hey There January 25th, 2007 07:37 AM

Sorry-no. It's all pancake syrup to me.

mlee January 25th, 2007 07:38 AM

I actually think this is a very cool, different name. I named a doll I had as a kid Jemima, because I loved pancakes! Unfortunately, I don't think I could ever consider it seriously because syrup is the first thing on my mind when I think of this name.

Acadia January 25th, 2007 08:23 AM

Yes, it does. Kids are cruel ... the jokes would be endless. And even after Jemima was grown-up, she wouldn't be taken seriously.

I wouldn't choose it even though it is pretty.

LovinMyLilFamily January 25th, 2007 09:06 AM

Sorry, can't get past the syrup association.

suthernWVswthrt January 25th, 2007 04:45 PM

REALLY REALLY dislike!!

bebe-v-j January 27th, 2007 08:53 AM

Reminds me of the syrup & Jemima Khan (dating Hugh Grant)

bootyqueen January 27th, 2007 09:15 AM

Ya... I'm in Canada, and even here it would be automatically associated with Syrup... Although you could call her that and when she complains about her name, just tell her you named her Jemima cause she's so sweet!!!

Maybe you could use Jemma? Kinda similar

MommytoOliviaandCole January 28th, 2007 06:54 PM

Do not care for!

I'm looking for a Hebrew/ Old testament name, hence all of the truly strange names I've posted lately.

On the (very slight) chance that we use Jemima, we will call her Jemma for short. Jemima would just be for the birth certificate and Synagogue.

nbbang January 29th, 2007 10:02 AM

I would never name a daughter Jemima b/c I live in the States and it has way too much baggage from the syrup.

Melanie. January 29th, 2007 02:58 PM

I like Jemma, but not Jemima.
I especially dislike the nickname Mimi.

meanboys January 29th, 2007 06:38 PM

I love Jemimah. I think it's very unique and classic. I wouldn't think twice about the syrup thing at all.

ladyellise January 30th, 2007 03:09 AM

No i wouldnt use it

I have to bump this, because many people aren't aware of it.

Jemima is a racially loaded name. It has "mammy" associations out the wazoo. Totally, totally unusable.

That was actually the "baggage" I was referring to in my original post. DH and I were actually quite surprised that no one brought up the racial stereotypes until now.

We would have had no problem with the name if it were just for the syrup, but we didn't want to give our future daughter a name that was so loaded.

not my style at all.....
