Sophia.

I know it's been in the top ten but I wonder how popular it really is. I haven't heard any lil girls in my area with this name. I also checked to see how many girls were named Sophia this year in my state and it's really not that many. Just curious what you ladies thought?

dinamommy July 9th, 2007 04:57 PM

I definitley think it's becoming more and more popular. I only know of one little girl named Sophia and none where I live either. If you like it, go for it! It's beautiful.

You're right, there were only 450 girls named Sophia in Michigan last year.

But there were also 420 the year before that. Those 450, the 420 from last year, and all the ones from this year (let's say around 400; it's not dropping off the charts anytime soon) will be in her general age group ... plus the ones born within a year or two after her. That's over 1200 baby girls who will potentially be in her high school classes in 15 years. Plus, there's no guarantee that she will live in Michigan her whole life. There are states where Sophia is ranked even higher.

I think when you're looking at popularity, it's not enough to just look at one year and one state because there are a lot of other variables (and a lot more little girls named Sophia than there might seem at first glance!).

If you want to choose Sophia because you absolutely love it, you're not alone. It's as popular as it is because a lot of people feel that way! But if you name her Sophia, give her a middle name that's not in the top 100. There are lots of beautiful names that aren't. Or choose a less common name and use Sophia in the middle ... either way, if she thinks there are just too many Sophias, she'll have something else to use instead. I sure wish I did!

~ Lauren, whose name was ranked #14 the year she was born ;)

I think its fairly popular, but not nearly like other names such as Emily or Aiden.

I don't know of any around here... except for my pastors daughter whose name is Sophie

You bring up many good points. I actually didn't even realize this was a top ten name when thinking of it. We are not picking this name or any name for sure yet. I'm just trying to get some different ideas.

There are lots of names I like that are in the top 10 ... it seems to be swinging more my style lately! The SSA list is great for getting ideas if you'd like to see popularity at the same time. You can view a list of the top 1000 names in the US for last year, scroll down all the way to the bottom, and start there. That way the less popular names will be at the top of your list when you look at it. It will be easy to tell.

Family names are also a good source; a lot of names from the two generations right before you (say your mom and grandma) won't be hugely popular right now.

I hope you find a beautiful name for your baby girl. ^_^

Awe. Lauren saves the day again. I hope you find a beautiful name for your little girl! Sophia is gorgeous. :(

-Melanie, whose named was ranked #88 the year she was born.

I love Sophia, and i know 3 sophias (all children under age 5)

-Lauren, ranked 17 when I was born (1982)

beckii July 10th, 2007 09:22 PM

I only know of one Sophia in my area. I think its a pretty name but really popular.

babydahl July 10th, 2007 10:43 PM

It's fairly popular here for babies, though I don't know any "older" kids with the name.

*kyle* July 11th, 2007 12:15 AM

I love the name Sophia, and it's one of many very popular names right now that I wish (for selfish reasons!) wasn't sooo popular.

- From Kyle, whose name hasn't been ranked *for girls* in any year from 0 to present and rather likes being unique. :D

*PurpleMidnight* July 11th, 2007 02:22 AM

not where I live

hardstairs. July 11th, 2007 08:19 PM

I think its getting there.

xoNicolexo July 11th, 2007 09:11 PM

I know they say It's popular but I have only met one Sophia my whole
life. I guess It really depends on where you live. I personally luv the
name. We almost named our daughter that.

m.and.a July 12th, 2007 07:08 AM

I don't know a single Sophia besides the lady on the Golden Girls and I think Jeff Gordon may have named his baby Sophia. I think it is a lovely name, but would be eliminated for me since it is in the top 100.

babyfeet July 12th, 2007 12:06 PM

I've only ever met one Sophie

Close it's Ella Sophia... which likely means another rise in popularity for an otherwise DARLING name. I really like it, but worry about the popularity. I would hate for my daughter to go through what I did, with 6 Nicoles in their graduating class.

Continuing the trend: Nicole who's name was #6 the year she was born (1982).

Rylin's_Mommy July 12th, 2007 10:44 PM

VERY popular!!!

FamilyShorty July 13th, 2007 07:34 AM

I don't know anyone with that name.
