when you??

How many signs did you start using when you starting signing with your LO's? Should I start with only one or two if Ez can't sign back yet? Can I introduce new ones if he can't use them?

I started out with about 5 and unintentionally dropped them all and focused on milk. Now that he has milk I need to start added to his sign vocabulary. I say go ahead and add on. I notice he is mimic'ing us more when we do silly faces and noise so I know he can handle more than one sign.

We started with milk, bath, and bed and I just used them at appropriate times (nursing, bath time, sleepy times). I started adding to those when she really started showing a lot of interest in signing, which was in November (right around 12 months, anyway!). We added in banana, more, and eat. Now she's got a whole pile of signs, because I just show her signs for everything she seems interested in, and we just do whatever signs are relevant for the moment.

Showing only one or two signs at a time is really more beneficial to the parent and caregivers. It helps you get comfortable with signing, and you don't have to learn a ton of signs at once etc. If that is what works best for you, then that's great! But if you are already comfortable doing the signs that you've already introduced, go ahead and add more. Afterall, we don't only say one verbal word until our child gets it, we talk to them using a whole bunch of words and they eventually pick one meaningful word to them and say it back. The same is true for signing :) Do what works for you and your family

That is a good point. In language they hear many words all day. I hadn't thought of it that way.
