A Thousand Splendid Suns

After DH's insisting for the last 3 years that I read this book, I finally picked it up and read it in 2.5 days. It was amazing. I know this board isn't used a lot, but I seriously think this is worth sharing with you lovely ladies.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini is the story of two women during three decades in Afghanistan. It's definitely a tale of women's rights... and not always the positive ones we, as modern females, are used to. It deals with the struggles between mother/daughter, the shame of having a child out of wedlock, the acceptance of an arranged marriage, and most importantly the changes that occurred in Afghanistan (for women's rights) between the infiltration of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union, the Taliban regime, and the eventual fall of the Taliban and hopeful return to a nation where women are treated as equals.

I'm so glad that I read it at this point in my life and not sooner. I will warn that the book does deal with several miscarriages, infertility, spousal abuse, and violent deaths.

I highly recommend this book!!! Don't wait 3 years like I did... pick it up now!

Here are a few quotes that really caught my attention:
“A man's heart is a wretched, wretched thing. It isn't like a mother's womb. It won't bleed. It won't stretch to make room for you.”

“Of all the hardships a person had to face, none was more punishing than the simple act of waiting.”

“Marriage can wait, education cannot.”

“Behind every trial and sorrow that He makes us shoulder, God has a reason.”

“I'm sorry," Laila says, marveling at how every Afghan story is marked by death and loss and unimaginable grief. And yet, she sees, people find a way to survive, to go on.”
