Homesteading

What are your feelings on this? Is it something you would consider if money and circumstances didn't get in the way? What would you consider the mark of a true 'homesteader'?

I really love living rurally (after 6+ years in the big city) and get really excited when we talk about things like adding chickens and goats to our little country property!

I love hanging wash on the line to dry, growing our own veggies in the garden, etc!!! There are just some things that make this life so charming to me.

I'd love to do it if I could. In the village it isn't possible, but my grandparents basically lived that way especially when they were younger, as they got older they bought more and were less self sufficient.

They lived on the farm and only left it once a week. They had a couple of cows for milk, they grew a beef cow at a time, chickens for eggs and meat, a pig or two, and a few turkeys. Grandma grew a full acre for a garden and grew every vegetable that they would eat that year, including popcorn and spent weeks each year freezing and canning everything they could. They had a large cold storage room for all the root vegies too. They had a wood burning furnace and took the wood from the dead trees in the bush. Grandma used a wringer washer for all her laundry and hung everything on the line to dry outdoors in the summer and indoors in the winter, she didn't own a dryer. It was definitely a simpler way of life.

I would love to be self sufficient, we live in a city though so thats not an option, but if we could ever swing it financially id do it in a heart beat

We are pretty self sufficient. I grow all our veggies and can/freeze them for winter. I have 400ish hills of potatoes planted. We grow our own beef, our Hutterite neighbours grow the chickens. Our water to the house does not need electricity to run.

I think our life has became simpler with us homeschooling we only go to town for sports, and there is no grocery store there. We have to go to the city for food and supplies.

I think it would be a hard adjustment for me but I remember when I was younger I wanted to be like Laura Ingalls :p

This is one of my dreams/goals! I want a small farm with beef/dairy cows, chickens, pigs, a veggie garden, and potentially a small orchard!

Crystal, how does your water run? When our power goes out we lose the pump too and that's been tough!

Our water is on gravity flow and it is strong enough to run the showers and everything. WE have a pump a small pump to run our water softener. but when power goes out we still will have water.

I guess we do have all the fruit trees and bushes too. I find it peace of mind knowing we can take care of ourself if need be.

Allright, I'm just going to confess, it's not my thing, and not my dream. If I had a true heart for it I could, I live on a farm and have the room. I have finally been able to say that I don't love having a big garden out loud. I now have a garden to grow stuff in that I can take out and eat right away, that part I like.
I'd never have one cow to milk just so that I have my own milk, way too much work and hassle.
I do like hanging stuff to dry outside. And I do really love living on a farm and having animals (cows and horses).
