Pushing out of seat?

My brother and SIL's daughter just turned 2. She's been facing forward for at least six months. She's a very tall child and when my SIL asked me how long I was going to keep Katy (16 months) rear facing and I explained the whole thing about protecting the spine and how it isn't going to bother their legs my SIL said her pediatrician said that the child could push with her legs and push herself right out of the top of the straps. This sounds fishy to me, but my SIL isn't really agreeing with the reasons I give for extended rear facing. The girl also isn't strapped in quite as snug as a hug and her chest buckle is a little low imo. What do you do in a situation like that? She's not rude about it. She just sticks with the "my pedi says..." <_<

It's too bad that she's getting such crumby information from her Doctor. Unfortunately VERY FEW Dr.s have ANY car seat training. Sadly they see a lot of bad outcomes and if all they are told about a crash victim is that they were rear facing at 2+yrs old they may have no idea if they were strapped in properly or at all. It's a 2 part system. The seat must be correctly installed, and the child must be strapped in properly (Snug as a hug, is right!)

If you are noticing some other issues with her car seat use, why not give a friendly suggestion that she have her seat inspected by a tech! They can at least correct the strap issues, and even if not the best practice, if she's following the law thats all that can be asked of her!

Bleh... The car seat is installed correctly for a forward facing child. It's just too early in my opinion to be forward facing. It's all fine by legal standards... I just see ways that could make the child safer that go beyond legal standards. I guess there's not much more I can do about it.

I would still recommend to her that she take it to a tech. There is always SOMETHING they can improve on :) and the tech would surely recommend the best practice of ERF to her, and maybe coming from a professional (Someone ACTUALLY trained in car seats) she would take it more seriously.
