Becoming a Long Distance Mommy
In about a week I will be doing what is the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life, and that is move away from my sons. They will stay with their dada (my ex) in Maine while I move to Arkansas until my ex moves down to South Carolina in 2-3 years.
I am moving now because I want to be able to save up some money for my own place so that I can take care of the boys properly on my own. It will be in Arkansas for now because a friend is renting a 3 bedroom apartment which we will split the bills. The area I am in right now in Maine has no job opportunity, the town is slowly dying and the only income I have had are occasional stipends from student loans. I will be graduating in June and the transitional housing I am currently in I am only permitted to stay until next April. So with all of these factors I feel the move is the most responsible, but the thought of being away from my boys for even a couple of years is killing me.
What are your thoughts on being a long distance parent? Have you had to deal with it yourself too?
Re: Becoming a Long Distance Mommy
Hugs and good luck! My dh's dds live 4 hours from us. Long distance parenting has been hard for him but that is mostly because his ex has made it that way. She wouldn't answer the phone when she called to talk to him or tell him when the girls had events like plays & dance recitals. So then they would be mad if he missed them.
You can make it work if your ex supports your relationship. I know we'd be in a different place if dh's ex had. With technology today, you can skype or facechat or whatever with you boys every day. It's so much easier to keep in touch now even than it was just a few years ago.
