With my first pregnancy I had a lot of shooting pains in my right side and it felt like I had a knot under the muscle in my abdomen. I was 8 weeks along. The doctor was preparing me for determining an ectopic pregnancy and talked about termination.
I cried buckets when the ultrasound revealed that it was just a very large cyst. 2 days later it burst and I felt much better, lol.
Ectopic pregnancy is very rare unless you have some pre-existing conditions that would make one more likely (you would know if you had any of them) or if you were on an IUD.
Miscarriage in the first trimester, however...it is a possibility and one that you should be aware of because you got a positive so very early. Do what you can to maintain a healthy lifestyle (no smoking, drinking, drugs, heavy exercise/lifting/athletics, etc) and take your pre-nate. That is all that you can do. If a miscarriage occurs don't think that it happened because of something you did. At that stage it most likely occurred for reasons beyond your control (such as the baby not being viable). The odds are in your favor, however. So, good luck and congrats on your healthy happy pregnancy!
