I love breastfeeding. I have used a bottle twice with BM in it just to see if he would take it (for babysitting etc).
Before the baby comes tough up the nipples. You can use lansinoh cream before as well, this is supposed to make the skin soft and supple or something lol. Anyways tough them up by rubbing them with a towel when you get out of the shower. Personally I think this hurt more then breastfeeding.
Don't have any bottles, pacifiers, formula, available to you. Not at your house and not at any place you can get to in the middle of the night.
Relax. Get naked, get baby naked, and laze around in bed and get to know each other.
Don't wait till baby is crying to feed. Do it when baby is smacking lips, playing with tongue etc.
Also remember that babies digest BM in 20 mins! So if baby is eating every half hour or hour, it's totally normal, just keep feeding!!!
Let baby suck away as well. When you get a good latch just let the baby suck and cuddle, it's an amazing bonding experience.
If you have a bad latch, use your pinky to stick in there and break the seal and try again. Keep doing this until you get it right.
Try different holds, football, craddle etc. Do what feels comfortable and stick with it until things are smooth then adjust if you want.
Make your nipple flat like a pan cake and the same way as the babies mouth. I personally found the foot ball hold the easiest. I put baby on a pillow so he was high enough to reach my nipple and then used both hands to flatten my nipple then I rubbed from his nose down and waited for a wide mouth and then stuck it in.
Stick the nipple in far so you reach the sucking reflex.
Some people have a hard time with it, but not everyone does.
I didn't have a hard time with it. The only thing I thought was hard was that when he was a newborn he spent hours and hours bfing, every day. But you can just put on a movie or whatever and relax. And after a few months it doesn't take hours.
To make sure he is getting enough to eat you just count the number of diapers he has. The La Leche League website has lots of bfing info. They also have breastfeeding support meetings in most towns that you can go to and meet other moms and ask questions.
