I'm kind of lost when it comes to the vitamins I should take. I was going to ask the doctor on Monday but they've cancelled my apt and I can't get in until Thursday or Friday. So I was just wondering if theres a certain brand I should take or just as long as they are pre-natal it doesnt really matter? And how much is enough folic acid? Thanks!
I'm on Materna.
I don't think it really matters what type you're on, unless your dr says otherwise. I had m/s before I went on my prenatals, and it got worse when I started, so I tried just taking the folic acid pills. I was still being sick so I just went back on Materna.
I think the percentage of stuff in all the prenatals are about the same so I dont think the brand name matters too much. I take an extra folic acid pill every morning for the 1st trimester. You can get a bottle of folic acid pills at GNC for $3.
I am a pharmacy tech and actually asked the pharmacist what the difference between the otc prenatals and the Rx prenatals. The diff is that the otc ones have .8mg folic acid and the Rx ones have 1mg folic acid. That is not a real big difference. My prentals were making my m/s even worse so I switched to a regular multivitamin (viactive chews) and Rx 1mg folic acid.
I am also taking a calcium supplement because I don't drink much milk or eat other dairy products. This is something you may want to consider also.
Hope this helps a little.
Thanks for the advice. I'm going to go get some tomorrow since I'm not sure when I'll be able to get into see the doc and I don't really want to wait to start taking them since they're needed for the development.
Btw totally off topic, but I told the father. Didn't really get much of a response which I can understand its a shock. Just gotta wait and see now I guess.
