how do you handle the hitting? what type of punishment do you give your kids?

my DS who is 19 almost 20 months (on the 11th) has started the lovely throwing toys/hitting stage. he just started doing this a couple days ago and every time he hits/throws we take the toy away and put him in the corner for one minute of time out. its not working! the second he gets out he trys to hit again and its usually his poor sister..i know he knows what he is doing is wrong because he will look at me and smile right before he does it. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I pull them aside and firmly say "No hitting" and sit them on the naughty step for one minute per year of age; sometimes I have to repeat but they get it eventually

It depends on which kid it is. I mean if Amber seems to hit being 1 all I can do is say no to her and stuff. But if the others do it essentially what Marie described, though again it depends on WHO they hit. If Courtney and Rock hit each other it is one thing, but if any of them hit Amber it is another...

I don't allow any of the kids to hit each other, two older ones or younger ones etc etc.. if they hit (the girls..) they are made to apologize straight away and get told of.. if they don't say sorry (which they do 90% of the time) they get put straight on the step .. hitting usually is caused over sharing toys in this house.

Lucas is too young yet to undetsand hitting etc but if he does hit out then we say in a firm voice "no" and he doesn't like that

We do the timeout thing too, and hitting isn't nearly as big of a problem here as it was at first.
