The state of Oklahoma just decided, and by an appallingly high margin I might add, that a doctor is protected from being sued if he or she chooses not to tell a woman that the baby she is carrying has a birth defect.
Quote:
Under this new law, a doctor may withhold information, mislead or even blatantly lie to a pregnant woman and her partner about the health of their baby if the doctor so much as thinks that fetal test results would cause a woman to consider abortion.
"Oklahoma, What have you done?"

Someone posted this in my PR but I haven't seen it here. WDYT?

This makes me sick. How can someone call themselves a Doctor and withhold information from their patients?

I cried when I read the article. I would be devastated to know my dr, who I trust with my health and my baby's health, could lie to my face to push his agenda and not be prosecuted. This is such a violation of a woman's rights that I can't fathom what could be next.

Agreed. Just because some people may choose (as is their LEGAL RIGHT) to abort, does NOT make it okay to withhold medical information about their child.

I am pro-choice and I find this completely ridiculous. From what friends, family, aquaintences I have on here and co-workers that have been in a situation like this, they only aborted if the baby was not viable for life and would pass away either in the womb, or shortly after. That's not to start a debate on that, but to show that not all women that have a baby with birth defects has an abortion (most that I know of that had one as a result of a birth defect, only reached that option when the birth defect was major and life threatening). So to not tell a woman that she is carrying a child with birth defects because she might have an abortion is absurd.

I'm just *loving* how the federal law allows abortions but states are putting in sneaky laws that make them difficult to administer. I really see this as a huge violation of rights.

I agree, there are other reasons she should be told. I would want to take the rest of the pregnancy to research the disorder and maybe get a jump start on getting the baby on waiting lists for therapies. I can't believe this passed!

That is so horrible! forget the whole abortion part of it- your doctor doesn't tell you anything, you expect a healthy baby and it has serious defects?? What a shock and that just leads to greater stress and more of a chance of the baby not getting taken care of well. And it is just wrong.

You know, people laugh at me when I say that I think the political pro-life movement (The POLITICAL pro life movement. I guess I'm capable of acknowledging that one can be philosophically pro-life and not hate women.) is much more about control and humiliation of women than it is about the pwecious, pwecious fetuses. And sometimes I wonder if I really AM crazy, because people react so strongly to it. And then some dumb **** like this happens. Oklahoma is also the only state in the union that still doesn't allow tattooing. When SOUTH CAROLINA is less backwards than you, you need to take a long hard look in the mirror. I was born in OK in 1982, and that's the last good thing Oklahoma ever did for us.

But seriously, along with this law, which is wrong for 1,000's of reasons, there's the super-fun ultrasound law, in which a woman seeking an abortion would be required to look (forced to look) at an ultrasound of the fetus while the doctor describes in detail what's on the screen. Because our that's what's going to charge up the little spark of wuv in our black, baby-killing hearts. Uh huh.

If it's too early in the pregnancy to see the fetus through traditional ultrasound, the doctor then has to do a vaginal ultrasound. And there is no exception for rape or incest. Because what a rape victim needs, more than anything, is for a strange person to shove a foreign object into her and show her exactly what her rapist did to her.

We're so secure as women that we are equals in society that we sit back and let others control our bodies by making laws that clearly violate the spirit of Roe V Wade. Why? When are we going to get angry?

Agreed.

I think the woman needs to know, in order to prepare herself for the serious defects her baby has.

Agreed. I'm pro-life, and I think this is an extremely dangerous, and incredibly short sighted law. This is a fail for ALL women.

I have no problem with this law, as it doesn't withhold vital health information from a woman. I think it has the potential to do a lot more good, than harm, which I cannot say about the law in the OP. What good can possibly come from lying to a woman about her health, or the health of her unborn child. What if the woman is at risk for a placental abruption, which could KILL her if it ruptures. If the doctor withholds this information, because she might abort knowing her life is in danger, and she sees spotting, she might not worry too much, when in reality, if her placenta fully abrupts, and she doesn't seek medical attention, she will die. I mean, this law is SO much more dangerous than can be expressed. It doesn't help ANYONE.

Exactly. Let's make the women who have abortions spend the rest of their life feeling horrible for their choice. I have no respect for others who spend their time trying to destroy the bodies or minds of other women. The pro-life movement should be ashamed of themselves and I cannot fathom how other women, regardless of their stance, are not outraged by this.

wow - that is all I can say. If I pay you to perform an ultrasound I expect honest results good or bad or ugly. It can alter decisions on either side of the spectrum yes, but it is a womans right to decide after all. And if it is something complicated it can't hurt to inform the parents to be and have a team of specialists on hand at the birth. I can' help but think, if we had known about DD"s heart condition an epidural or induction would have never been an option. And because of that will never be an option for my family. While I know there is no way without a fetal echo her defect would have been picked up, if the OBGYN knowingly withheld that from us - I would be livid! (which I doubt my OB at the time did, BTW, just an example).

That is ridiculous.

They are turning this into some sort of "pro-life" thing, when that is completely irrelevant.

This is just not giving information that could be vital to the life of that child.

Okay... Woo!, ladies aren't having abortions b/c of the condition of their child.. but.. HEY!, The child can suffer when he/she comes out due to not having the correct care immediately available to them that they will have to get due to being special needs.

As long as the baby is not getting aborted, who cares if he/she is not getting the proper medical attention they need!

That is just so ignorant.
