i posted this on the car seat forum, but if anyone here can help: I was just told that the infant car seat we were gonna borrow from a friend isnt going to happen...grrrr, so, here's my dilema:

Ok, so we are getting the Britax Diplomat carseat. It says it is good for 1 day old till whatever...
My question is, when we bring our newborn home from the hospital, can she be in that?? seems big for a teeny baby. And will the hospital let us leave with baby in our arms to walk to the car with the seat in it?
Should we just buy a snugride or something so that its easier to bring baby back and forth places? ( not that I plan on shlepping her around in the freezing snow and H1N1 infested winter her first couple months.
I just dont wanna spend ( and cant...but wont compromise her safety) another 200$ for something she will only use for a few months.

Help?? Experienced moms please!

i always go with the bucket seats.. like the snug ride. and go to the convertable one when they are about 8 months. and you dont have to pay 200.00 for it. you can get gracos from about 90.00 and up.

heres mine

Graco SnugRide Infant Car Seat : Target

and at my hospital they actually like to see you put the baby in the seat. i just bring the bucket into the room, strap my baby in and then go that way.. plus you wont want to be sitting there in january stuggling with a carseat outside really.. the best you can do is pull up to the door and put baby in the car there. but i wouldnt reccomend walking to the car like, in the parking lot... you will most likely be getting a wheel char ride out anyways,

another thing i remember is... carseats are only good for 7 years. after that they are expired.. well here MI kids have to be in a booster seat until they are about 8 years old... so.. if you get a big one from the start, you will need to get a booster in the end. but if you start out with the bucket, then you can move into the big one and stay there and not worry about another seat from then on...

and my babies both used their infant bucket for about 9 months total.. so to me it was worth the money spent.. and while you wont be planning on shleping baby around a lot in winter.. she will be leaving the house for Drs. appts and stuff... and i find these infant buckets to be a life savor in winter!! just put on a carseat cover... grab it and go! no messing with stuff in an open car with painfully freezing blowing wind rushing in.. (michigan mom here!!)

oohh... and if your trusting... and really dont plan on using it all the time.... i got mine used. you can get a used one for about 40.00, your not supposed to buy them used but, people sell them. and people buy them.. its the same as buying a used pump...experts say dont do it.. but a lot of people do..

I don't know about the hospital letting you carry the baby out or not. I would think so, cuz they could just wheel you out in a wheelchair (like a lot of hospitals do) and you could hold your baby. I don't see the big deal, but they may see it differently. IMO I like the snugride carseats when they're infants. It's SOOO much easier to take them places. I didn't buy a "regular" carseat for my son until he outgrew his "baby" carseat. But, those bigger carseats are supposed to fit infants too. They do look huge, though, don't they? That's what I always thought too. I think you can get a "baby" carseat for less than 200 can't you? Not sure, cuz the one I had was a travel system with a stroller that I got for one of our baby shower gifts.

i was against having one of the infant seats as well but i got one and i used it and i'm glad i did. granted, if i was going somewhere for a long time, like the mall, i wore emerson. but if i was going to grocery shop, it was easier to use the infant carrier...especially because of the cold and snow. had it been summer i probably would have worn her more often than i used the infant carrier.

that being said, some of the convertible carseats are fine when they are born...but others arent. they say they can accomodate a newborn, but if you have a small or short newborn, they may not actually fit safely. the people on the car seat board can probably tell you for sure whether or not yours is really good for a newborn or not.

the sketchy thing about buying a carseat used is that you never know if it was in a car accident. i would hesitate to buy a used carseat unless its from someone you really trust.

to be honest I've always found the people who go straight to convertible seats to be a lil strange lol

I personally wouldnt even consider that because I remember all the times my dd would not go to sleep/stop fussing without a car ride. If I had to take her out of the seat to bring her in the house it would have woken her. Obviously the whole point of the car ride was now wasted.

I think the hospital will want to see the carseat but once they see you have one they should be okay?

We're gonig straight to a convertable car seat. We will have to remove it from the car and take it to the nurses station for tehm to check that it's less than 7 years old and made for a newborn.

I have no intention of taking baby out with out DH cause Carrie is unable to walk, so we have no need for a infant carrier.

We were toying with the idea of going straight to a convertible but have since decided to buy a really good infant seat and then selling it in the spring to recoup costs. *this worked fabulously last time since the seat is relatively new*

One thing I wanted to mention was that although the Britax carseats say they can accomodate an infant of 5lbs+ in the convertibles unless you have an uber-tall baby 90% of the time they can not. The lowest harness slot seems to be too tall for brand new babes - since it has to be AT or BELOW the shoulder. Sunshine Kids Radian just came out with a 45lb RFing XT model in Canada, and they are reputed to be more suitable from birth with regards to harness height. HTH!

I must be one of the strange ones.. I'll be going straight to a convertible car seat. I had an infant seat with DS#1 and it was pointless.. it was heavy and hard to carry, and he was out of it by 4 months old. This time we are in NC, so the weather is not extremely cold... so I'm not worried about being able to put a cover on the seat. I'll be wearing him when we are out of the house (and probably a good portion of the time we are in the house.. lol). We got the Graco My Ride 65 and I really love it.

I've always waited until at least 6-8 months b/4 placing any of my babies in a convertible seat but for me it was just personal preference. I've looked at the ones that state they are good from 5 lbs and up but just don't seem safe enough to place a tiny baby in. As far as will hospitals let you carry baby out--I've given birth at 3 different hospitals and all of them insisted that I bring the seat in to be inspected as well as show them that I knew how to place baby safely in the seat. If you aren't a "first time" mom then sometimes they will send a nurse out to your car with you and watch you strap baby in. I think once they even went down to the car w/ Dh to watch him strap it in the back seat properly, but every hospital is different.

We are getting infant seats for the girls. Being it will be winter is much easier to just throw a blanket over them and go. If you use a convertible they can not wear a jacket in it, so you will have to do that every time you take them in and out.

I agree with the infant car seat, but if you cant afford it, you CAN leagly leave with the convertable seat even if they are checking it (my dr even will get inside your car *with permission* to make sure its tight and secure) as long as it is facing the back. The convertable ones can go in either way, and you can make a appointment usually with the police department to correctly install. I had my cop uncle do it, but that car broke down, and we spent 1/2 an hour fixing it after the dr saw it and found out we did it wrong.

You just need to make sure about the weight and height requirements of the convertible seat you have. If its 5lb-20lbs rear facing with the five point harness and you have a 4lb baby then it wouldnt be safe.

We will be buying 3 car seats for this baby. We have her infant carrier that she will use till she is about 6 months, then we will get a convertible rear facing that goes to 35lbs, and then get a forward facing that goes to 80lbs with a 5 point harness. I think Im just going to skip the booster seat and keep the girls in the 5 point harness until they are 7 or 8 or she grows out of it. In the state of Louisiana a child must be 6 years old and over 60lbs to ride in a regular seat belt.
