OK, so hereīs my dilemma.

I loved Zach but DH hates it
So itīs a no-go.

The hard part is that we both really like Matthieu and to be honest, I canīt picture the baby with any other name.
Now the dilemma is... Matthieu (Matthew in English) is the French version of Mateo in Spanish.
My nephewīs name is Mateo.
I know they donīt sound the same and the cousins will not grow up together (they might see each other every few years when we travel or they travel but thatīs it)... but I donīt want my brother to think Iīm copying him either

I was suggested to ask my brother what he thinks and if heīd be ok.
IDK... Iīm tempted to wait until the end and then tell him I canīt possibly find anything else... or not mention it at all (he may not realize it).

My fear is that 1) heīll say "nah, get your own name" or 2) heīll never stop teasing me about it.

So what would you do?

Id totally use it! You're only gonna see him every few years or so. The namedls may mean the same thing, but they don't sound the same.

They don't sound the same so unless both get shortened to Matt, they're different enough for me. Especially since you all live in sifferebt countries and the kids will hardly be around one another.

I do think the ettiquette thing would be to run it by him first though. I doubt he'd care. I wouldn't.

I love the name Matthieu.

My college roommate was from Montreal and this was her cousin's name. I loved the way her mother (who was Swiss) pronounced Matthieu. It sounded so classy.

Since the name is different from your brother's son and the boys won't see each other much, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm assuming your brother's son isn't a Matteo Jr.; so, there wouldn't be a conflict there.

I would just use it.

If you really want to make sure it's ok with your brother I'd call (or whatever) and just say "We really like the name Matthieu and can't imagine naming him anything else - would that really bother you?"

I doubt he'd mind - especially since the language and spelling are totally different - nevermind the fact you hardly see one another.

I would use it. They're different.

If you still feel like you should ask, id start with "i know you probably won't care - they're so different & we live so far apart, it won't even be an issue...but since they both translate to the same thing in English, i figured id run it by you.. "

I would use it. Does your brother even know what it translate into? If he don't, I wouldn't even tell him lol.

Lol
I could tell him it translates to Matias and he'd totally buy it

And no, my brother's name isn't Mateo either

Honestly? I don't even feel like calling him about it.
It's not him, it's my SIL who I think will pitch a fit 'cause she's the jealous type.
I mean... She was "rubbing her pregnancy in my face" without knowing I was pg too... Just because she thought she'd "beat me to it"

Oh well, I think we're keeping it!

I would use it too. I named Ryan even though my sil's ex husband's name was Rhyan. She had a FIT about it, but I couldn't imagine naming him anything else. She got over it. My mil even spelled him name with the h for a long time. Drove me crazy but she eventually quit.

Go for it. Guys don't generally get booty hurt about things like that, it's the women.

I like the name!
