I thought i'd jump over to this board since you guys prob have more experience with this but im not classified high risk or anything but since about 7 weeks along until now (13 weeks) my cervix feels kinda open at the tip enough for a very tip of a finger to fit in but doesnt go any further, Ive had numerous scans already about 4 since my last pregnancy was what they thought was "molar"but wasnt. anyways anyone else experince this? I figured out that 2.54 cm =1 inch wide and 1.27 is 1/2 inch and it doesnt feel that wide at all just like the very tip of my index finger, any insight? no bleeding etc. just some mucus discharge sometimes but no blood. Thanks! -- forgot to mention i've had a swab done at 8 weeks for my "first prental appt, she didnt say anything about my cervix looking open, and for ultrasounds they never said anything looked wrong with it either although im not sure if they would see an open cervix on u/s, guess i just need some re assurance since this is my first baby.

Were any of the ultrasounds transvaginal (where they put a wand "up there")? I know TV ultrasounds will show any dilation in the cervix. I am pretty sure regular u/s will too. When is your next u/s? I would definitely ask them directly about what you are feeling.

We have a lot of ladies here with a lot of cervix knowledge, hopefully they can tell you a little more than I can.

ya at my 7 week ultrasound they did a transvaginal u/s then just regular external ones from there on out since the baby was easy to find, I did some searching in posts and it appears that the outside of the cervix can feel a little open but the inside is pretty tight, I also had a d&c in march so maybe that could cause it too since they have to manually dialate you for that, Im sure they would have told me if something was wrong since i had an internal swab done at 8 weeks. Just thought i'd get some input

Well, it never hurts to call your doctor. She probably has the old scans right in your chart and maybe she can tell you over the phone and ease your mind.

In the Condition Specific Resources Subforum, there is a thread all about cervical issues in pregnancy - check it out, maybe there is something useful for you in there

What you are describing sounds like you are 1cm dilated as one finger tip is 1cm.
Normally if this was a second pregnancy or third or more it is normal for the exterior OS to be slightly open while the interior OS stays closed. (that is if the mom has dilated previously) this is called a multips OS.
You said you had a D&C which could have possibly effected your cervix since they have to dilate you for it.
You should talk to you doctor about it and ask to get a TVU. That won't show dilation however it will show if your cervix is prematurely shortening and if that were the case you would need a cerclage put in right away. Also your doctor will be able to get a better feel around in there if he/she performs an internal themself.
Also it is not good to be doing too many internal exams yourself, as it can introduce infection and can also cause contractions because of the stimulation of the cervix. That is best left to the doctors

I hope this helps and I hope things work out OK for you. Please KUP and let us know how your appointment goes!!
