Hi ladies! I hope you don't mind me popping in here. I have been a long time member of JM & host/co-host 3 boards. My friend just found out she is pg about a week ago. Last Wed she had a really bad bleeding episode which led her to the drs. She had a follow up appt today & her BP was 160/105. I haven't gotten all the details but she has a history of severe hypertension & has had seizures due to it. She was finally taken off her meds about 3 months ago & her BP has been just slightly above "normal". I know this IS NOT a good situation. She is definitely in store for a very difficult pgcy. I have read up a little about this & preeclampsia. I am very worried about her. Can any of you give me any more information???? TIA!

She's lucky to have a friend like you. I don't have this problem but I know that bed rest does lower blood pressue a lot. When I was in the er, my blood pressure shot up to 140 probably due to stress. after a couple of days of strict hospital bed rest, although I was pretty stressed out still, my bp went back down to 100 and then to 90. Nurse told me that bed rest helps a lot and improves the blood flow to the baby.

So, Dr. further suggests bed rest and strict monitoring by the obg and also bringing in a specialist. Lets nip the problem in the bud before it gets too big. Blood pressure problems tend to get worse as the pregancy progresses.

Toximia and preeclampsia usually don't occur until after at least 16 weeks (that's what the high risk folks have told me today anyway). But there are some blood pressure medications that she probably can take during pregnancy. If that fails the Dr can always prescribe Magnesium but you have to be carefully monitored once on it. Laying down on her Left side can also help to lower Blood pressure (increases blood flow to the heart). Best of luck to your friend!

I have no advice either. But my thoughts are with her. Its not going to be fun. Hope she can gain control of her blood pressure.

There is blood pressure medication she can get while pregnant. She needs to take it easy and talk to her doctor about what she can do. Preeclampsia usually doesn't happen until your 2nd trimester, usually 20 weeks or later. I had severe preeclampsia and ended up with HELLP Syndrome with my first pregnancy and am praying it won't happen again...but so far things are going just like my last pregnancy with severe morning sickness... Anyway, make sure she talks with her doctor because if she does have preeclampsia it is very serious, even the high blood pressure can be very serious. I am high risk because of what happened my first pregnancy. I do know alot about preeclampsi and HELLP so if you have any specific questions, just pm me

With that kinda BP that early she needs to be medicated or seeing a Dr for treatment now. I take BP meds just fine while pregnant, there are choices out there. I hope someone gets on top of it soon.....
