I meet with the specialist(Peri) tomorrow about my positive AFP test for downs syndrome.
After much discussion my husband and I feel that is is more than likely that we will opt to have the amnio.

If you have had one, or know someone who has tell me about it. You can leave about the part about how painful it is. I want to know, did you have leakage of amnioc fluid afterwards, bleeding, cramping, etc?

I just want to know what to expect, they told me I will need to be on bed rest the day of the procedure and then at least 2 days of light activity. Did you REALLY stay on bed rest the whole day?

And please don't talk me out of it, that is for hubby and I to make the final decision tomorrow after the genetic counseling and ultrasound. I just want to know what yo expect about the procedure itself.

Thanks in advance!

well actually its not really painful
The big concern is the amount of laying about you can do afterwards. You should be in full stay in bed mode for a day after you have it. See what happens is they poke an oh so fine needle into the amniotic sac and that breeches it as you can imagine it would have to. So you need to do nothing to allow it to heal up.

You can basically watch the entire proceedure on the ultrasound screen.

I think you need the peace of mind. I won't be talking you out of it but rather supporting you fully.

Good luck. Hope everything goes well and you get a great outcome.

I'm scared of needles to begin with, so I was kind of scared. I had mild cramps afterwards, I think they told me to take Advil if I needed it. It might have been something else.

I must admit we went to the mall and ate after the amnio, and did a little shopping for the baby. Then I went home and stayed in bed. I didn't have any problems with fluid levels until the end of my pregnancy, which was unrelated to the amnio.

Thank you!!!!
I will rest, I promise. I just wondered because I am supposed to be at a big meeting for about 30 minutes after and I was not sure if I should go. It would only be 30 minutes, but I will pass, no meeting is as important as my little boy!

Also, we are driving down to my parents house tomorrow, hubby will drive and I will lay in the car all comfy, I promise. Tomorrow is my mom's birthday and we were planning to go out to dinner. I didn't know if sitting was any worse than laying down. BUT of course I would not want to risk anything and I will get specific instructions from the Dr. as well.

Thank you both for your support.

My SIL had the amnio done in her current pregnancy. I don't know too many details of how it all went for her.

But she did bed rest that day and had to take it easy for a few days to let it heal up. I do know she had no complications.

Some docs will say sitting is the same as standing when it comes to some pregnancy situations..... I just know that from a friends experience during her pregnancy.

Good luck and hope all goes well!

OK I don't know what happened to my response, but I will post again...

I had one late in my last pregnancy to check for fetal lung development. It was painful, the OB who did it said "you have really tough skin" he really had to push hard to get the needle in. It was uncomfortable during the whole procedure. I had lots of cramping and contractions for about a day or so. I highly recommend that you take the day to rest and I also suggest that you have your SO, DH or a friend come with you during the procedure.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hi thereI had an amino done on April 23rd to test for Trisomy. I didnt find it that bad at all. The needle was in my belly for about a minute. I had very mild cramps during, like period cramps and nothing at all after that. Its really not nearly as bad as what its made out to be..I agree 100% with your decision. It is better to know then not. I would do it again in a heartbeat..Good Luck to you , I hope all works out well for you..Hi thereI had an amino done on April 23rd to test for Trisomy.
