I had my second OB visit this morning. We have a heartbeat. It was over 150 so my mom says I am having a girl. I lost 5 lbs since last months visit which is probably due to my eating more healthy food and cutting out the junk. My BP is good. Everything seems to be going great. The doctor said that once we heard the heartbeat, the chances of something going wrong were much, much less.

Thats great news. I am so happy you heard the heartbeat. I know its a huge relief for you. yea that number sounds like a girl but remember its not always accurate. lol I know quite a few ladies who were convinced it was either a boy or girl depending on the number and it turned out to be the opposite.

Are they doing the u/s appt next or will it be a regular ob appt? When is it?? lol

The next appt. is June 1st. I don't know if they will be able to do anything beyond the normal visit or not. I am so flaky sometimes that I didn't even ask how far along I have to be in order to get a good gender reading from the u/s. I blame it on being a first timer.

I haven't had my first appt yet (Thursday for u/s & May 19th for appt)....but I'll probably be the same way......have all these questions and forget to ask And, I don't really want to be one of those women that calls the docs office every other day for silly things.

The best time to predict gender is around the 18-20 week mark. That is usually when they do a routine u/s anyway to do a basic anatomical check, measure head, arms, legs, look at heart, stomach, bladder, etc. Just had mine today and everything was just fine! We looked away, though, when the doc ventured down "yonder" to measure the femur. He later said that he wasn't able to tell, but admitted that he chose not to look very hard since we didn't want to know.

I have heard of stories where people were told they were having one gender but they ended up having the other -not sure how common that is, though! Can you imagine? I'm guessing that girls are harder to detect b/c you are looking for the absence of something, you know?

You're right, Heather....they aren't always accurate. There was a post in my DDC about a gal (not from the DDC) that had a listing on Craigslist for all of her baby girl items since that's what she was told she was having and then ended up with a boy. We're going to find out, but unless the tech is like 100% sure I don't think we'll go hog wild at buying things.

Wow! Can you imagine? I'd say if they tell you that you are having a boy, you are pretty safe to go hog wild! Shoot, you earned it! I really don't know how common those "mistakes" are.

Sounds like a great appointment. My babies h/b always started fast (160s - 170s) until about 14 or 15 wks. By the time I delivered they were around 140. All boys.

Congratulations Beth! I'm adding to Kelty and hopefully not going to disappoint your Mom... my pregnancies the heartbeats were always over 150 and...two boys!

When having my 20wk ultrasound in my 2nd pregnancy (didn't find out the sex) the tech was telling us she had a good success rate - she had gotten one wrong in a year. If you think about how many she does in a year I guess that she was pretty good, but not always accurate. She told the couple it was a girl, but it turned out to be a boy - it was their 2nd child and they had a daughter already so i'm sure they didn't mind that she got it wrong and I guess it truly was still a surprise!!!!
