Hi ladies,

I had my first ob appt today. I got to see the heartbeat again (and hear it this time too which was nice). I didn't think though and went to the toilet right before my appt, so he had a hard time getting a decent view for measurements.

I have had some stomach pains over the last 5 or 6 days which had worried me, and he said he could see 'old blood' on the scan so that would be the cause of the pains. He said it can happen when...well i'm not going to explain this right but I think he said between week 6& 8 when the placenta(?) starts to take over there can be a 1 to 2 day lag in when it kicks in and a drop in hormones and sometimes that can cause some bleeding (something like that!).

ANYWAY, he said not to panic. I asked if I would likely pass the blood and he said Possibly... if so to give him a call and go in for another scan just to check on things.

While I guess it is positive that he has seen this so I will try not to panic if I do pass some brown blood, obviously it is going to be on my mind a little.

He has changed my EDD back to 20th April (based on LMP) because he said he'd rather do that unless I knew exactly when I ovulated.

All in all he was happy so I guess I just have to go with that and hope the stomach pains don't continue.

Yay for hearing that heartbeat & having a good appointment!!! I did not know that there may be some bleeding when the placenta takes over. I'll have to keep that in mind, since I'm just a couple of weeks behind you.

My 1st OB appt is tentatively set for Sept 17th, but that may change as I'm not sure how long the RE wants to see me for. I should hopefully learn more after I see him tomorrow morning for the u/s.

With your change in your EDD, do you want me to change the Due Date List with this update? Or do you think your doc may change this date on you again?

Yes, change it thanks Becky. If that is what he is going to work from then I will go with that too. I did tell him that I believe the scan I had last week was accurate because i had been using opks but measurement wise this week he seemed to think (from what he could tell - he had trouble because I didn't have a full bladder), that I was on track for 8 wks 1 day, rather than 7wks 5 days..

I'll have to remember the full bladder. I'm so used to vaginal u/s, and having an empty bladder so I'll probably forget as well.

and I'll go make that change now.

Congrats on hearing the HB!! Best sound in the world!
Don't worry you won't have to keep a full bladder forever for u/s. They routinely have me empty before I go in now.

yay for a good appt - and hearing the hb!! I didn't realize some bleeding could occur around the placenta taking over either - but that kinda makes sense...i remember my OB telling me to expect some changes then too (like m/s getting better (LIE!) and bbs hurting less (TRUTH!))....glad everything is going well, and measuring ahead is always a good thing!

So glad that your appointment went well, Lenore! I had heard of potential bleeding when the placenta takes over, but to be on the safe side if you do see any please go in and get checked. I hope the pains go away soon! Bug measured ahead by about 3 days early on, but at our 20 week u/s she measured right on schedule. Super happy you got to hear the h/b.....I love that sound!

Jess I will definitely go in if I see any blood. I wouldn't be able to get peace of mind otherwise! I did pass some dark brown blood at 8.5 weeks with my first pregnancy and everything turned out just fine, but as I guess any woman would say... it's still something I'd rather not see.

But I don't know what happens if I don't pass it... does it just stay there and show as blood on scans for my whole pregnancy? Or does my body reabsorb it? I didn't think to ask at the time - was too busy concentrating on his explanation!

Lenore, I'm so glad you had a good appt. I also had some old blood on the u/s and they told me the same thing. I never spotted and at subsequent appointments the blood seemed to have reabsorbed. I hope that's what happens for you so there is no chance of worry KUP

Thanks Kelty - that is what I'm hoping too. I hate now that if I feel any discharge (tmi sorry!) I go to the toilet and expect it to be blood, though have relaxed a bit now that it's been almost a week since he saw it on the scan, and no bleeding.

Lenore - I'm the same way when I feel any discharge. And with being on both progesterone & estrogen supplements (taken vaginally), I have a lot of discharge. I will be VERY happy once these supplements can be stopped.

Yes the stomach pains have gone away thankfully - hopefully not to return! Becky that would be another annoying side effect of the supplements so I can definitely understand why you'll be glad to stop them!
