I don't know who told you that they can't get sick this young but they were wrong. It sounds like he has a cold. I would call your pedi doc about the coughing up fluids. I would be a little concerned with that since he is so young.

I hope he feels better soon.

Hi Casey, I see Matthew is 5 weeks old, that is young and yes they do get colds. Travis, who is our 18 month old, got sick at 6 weeks old and he was a May baby. I figured it was past cold season. But I ended up taking him in because he was so sick and he had pnemonia. I don't want to scare you, but keep a close eye on him. I would also worry about him spitting up stuff, I worry they can choke. I don't mean to worry you though. I'm usually not one to go to the doctor very quickly, but felt bad when I didnt' take Travis is sooner. Even if they just reassure you that its a cold.

Good luck and let us know how he is.

Luckily Travis wasn't hospitalized, we ended up coming home with a vent of sorts to administer his meds.

My son was super congested and had difficulty eating when he was a few weeks old. I did the old fashioned steam shower and humidifer in the bedroom routine and he got some relief.

KUP!

I'd give your pedi a call, if anything to have some peace of mind. The coughing up stuff might be due to some drainage -that happened with Carson, but you probably want to mention it to your doc just to be safe.

Thanks gals...

So we just got home from the peds ofice. He does have a cold. His temp is borderline as far as fever goes, so we have to monitor his temp and call the doc back around 330 to let him know. If his temp goes above 100 (101 or more) we have to take him straight to the ER....Hope this goes away soon...I hate seeing him sick and uncomfortable....

Sorry I didn't see this earlier...Savannah caught a mild cold when she was about 12 days old - and I thought the same thing since I had heard BF babies "never" caught anything. Thankfully we were scheduled to see the Dr w/in a day for her 2 week appt...she was also running a borderline temp (99.5). Other than letting it ride its course (and watch for temp above 100) our Dr also had us get Little Noses so we could help clear out her nose...the stuffiness definitely made feedings challenging and she was spitting up more I think b/c she was having trouble breathing. You can also (very carefullly) help clean out her nose with end of q-tip if her nose is completely blocked. Hope Matt is feeling better soon!
