Emily has the worst chapped cheeks. The winter here has been so dry and windy that her cheeks are cracking and super red. I've tried Eucerin, J&J Coco & Shea Butter Baby cream...
Do you use a facial cream on your baby's skin? If so, which one do you use?

jake has had severe eczema since he was born and the specialists have recommended any oil based moisturiser. alot of the dry skin creams available in the pharmacy are water based and the specialist said that i might as well do nothing. petrolium jelly (vaseline) was great if you'd nothing to hand, or liquid parafin, but i use a cream called diprobase and find it amazing. not sure about its availability in the states tho, but anything oil based would clear it up fast.

When Nathans skin gets really bad I use Ponds on him. But maybe try rubbing olive oil or something on her skin. Or the Vaseline idea. It will yuck up her sheets but she needs a good overnight deep down soaker. Poor thing.

Just want to add that, (and this is coming from SO, who works in the pharmacy at a hospital) that Aquafor is better than vaseline (petroleum jelly) for this type of thing because while it has petroleum in it is not petroleum BASED.

I have a hand cream that has Parafin in it... from Bath & Body Works... wonder if that might work...
Her pediatrician recommended using Cetaphil or Aveeno Baby.
I'll try the Aquafor first before I change the rest of her skin care regimen. It's just her cheeks that are really bad. In the light it looks like someone took a very thing tipped marker and drew little lines down her cheeks... When she smiles her cheeks look tight and swollen... but it's just her cheeks lack moisture.
Thanks very much for your advice Ladies

My ds Christian had this on his face, too, when he was younger and we lived back east. His pediatrician called it fat pad eczema. He told us to use the Aquaphor, but also, to give him Acidophilus tablets. I tell you, they work wonders, and nobody really knows why!! You can buy them at a Ritzman's pharmacy or any other holistic pharmacy, or even Hi health and places like that. They are chewable tablets and you keep them in the refridgerator. Even the doc said he didn't know why they helped, but they really do! Christian's cheeks were so bad they would actually bleed and scab, but after keeping him on the tablets and using the Aquaphor, it all disappeared.
oh, and wanted to add one more thing...the doc explained this condition is caused because the blood cannot circulate to the top of their skin on their little chubby cheeks and this is why this condition happens...it's not really eczema, but that's just what they call it.

I use baby lotion on her cheeks, and vaseline advanced therapy lotion on her body for her eczema, it worked wonders compared to eucerine and vanicream.

I just use regular lotion and put it on all throughout the day when they are up and moving around. They tend to forget it's there and don't wipe it off when they are busy. If I put it on at night they end up wipping it off in their sleep.

i know its not petroleum based, but it is oil based, which is what severely dry skin needs. I dont know what aquafor is, but i passed on the info that my sons dermatologist told me in case lily didnt have anything else to hand. i think every house has some vaseline!
lily, i am a huge fan of aveeno. I use it on jake as an everyday moisturiser and he hasnt had a flare up in a while, even in the cold weather. i also have an anti itch cream from them which he loves.

Petroleum jelly (or vaseline, they're the same thing) isn't BAD, it's just that Aquafor which is similar only not petroleum/oil based has vaseline/petroleum jelly IN it, but isn't based solely on it. It's better than vaseline, but vaseline would still be okay if it's the only option. I wasn't trying to bash vaseline, just my personal experience and doctors and all that have told me it's a better option than vaseline if it's available.
Wanted to add...
Aquaphor Healing Ointment protects dry, cracked or irritated skin to help enhance the natural healing process and restore smooth, healthy skin.
* Clinically proven to reduce healing time
* Creates a protective barrier that seals in moisture
* Helps heal raw, irritated skin caused by radiation treatments, facial resurfacing procedures and Atopic Dermatitis
* Soothes and helps protect extremely dry, chapped or chafed skin and lips caused by winter weather or diabetes
* Soothes and protects minor burns
* Fragrance-free, preservative-free, non-irritating
They have also a BABY Aquaphor, which is what we have.
Vaseline® Petroleum Jelly serves two functions: First it helps keep the outside world out - it protects skin from the effects of weather and exposure. Second, it acts like a sealant to help keep the inside world in - it forms an occlusive barrier to the natural water loss of our skin.
These are from their respective product websites. Vaseline is good because it protects, I suggested Aquaphor because it actually speeds up the healing process.

oh i totally agree that it isnt the best option. but as i said, most people have a jar of it in their house, which could have provided belle with some relief until lily got to a store.

Honestly Ladies, I kept at the Eurcine Intensive Care that I've used on Belle in the past, three times a day. After breakfast, after lunch and after dinner.
I figured out the issues:
1) she has sensitive skin
2) the terry clothes I was using on her face after a meal are fine, but I was being a little too rough.
3) As her skin dried out, it made a crusty cracks and bumps on her cheeks, which I mistook for dried on food... which made me use the cloth a little too hard on her cheeks...which in turn made her cheeks even more red, more irritated....
See the vicious cycle?
So... I've stopped using the terry cloths on her skin except at baths, I use just a plain wipe run under warm water to clean her face after each meal and/or snack. And so far so good. The irritated red streaks are gone from her cheeks and she's no longer fighting with me when I try to wash her face or put cream on her cheeks...
Thanks so very much for all your advice =)
