do you know your familys heritage?
I just recently got a document my dads long lost sister sent me tracing my dads side of the family all the way back to the first one to come to America in the 1760s from Ireland!

That is cool.
I don't really know anything about my family. I know my maternal grandfather was French, and my maternal grandmother was Dutch. I don't know if they were born in Canada or if they came here, or if their parents came here... Also, I don't know anything about the paternal side of my family, biologically. I've never met my biological father and know nothing about him. My step-dad legally adopted me before him and my mom got married, which was just before I turned 2.

My mothers family came over from Denmark in 1860. There were 5 kids and the parents. Only 2 brothers survived the boat and Ellis Island.
My dads family came over sometime during the Potato Famine in Ireland. They are Scottish tho but apparently were in Ireland at the time...as far as we know. We dont have much info on them overall.
ETA~my dads family took the Mc off their last name after getting here to fit in better.

Genealogy is a big hobby of mine. I have an ancestry.com account and most of my lines can be traced to the 1700s and back. I also have done 23andme DNA ancestry testing, and had help from professional genealogists.
The last forum I was active on was a genetic forum, so they helped me a lot with that stuff. I'm genetically about 100% Northern European, mostly English, and a bit of German, Spanish, Scottish etc. I'm descended from some of the earliest settlers in my area.

I know that my Dad's Dad's side came from Germany in the 1800s. My dad's mom's side came from Scotland as an indentured servant in the 1700s. I know nothing about my mom's side.

On my mom's side, my maternal grandmother is Italian and my maternal grandfather is Polish. Both of them were the first generation born in the USA. When we traveled to Italy several years ago, our tour guide actually took us to the hometown that my great-grandparents were from and we found a couple relatives!
On my dad's side, my grandparents were both of Irish and German descent but I don't know the exact make-up. I'm also not sure which generation came to the US, just that it was before my grandparents were born.

My dad has a book that traces his dad's heritage back to the first Norwegians to come over in the 1700s. His mom was Irish, but she died when he was really young and has very little information about her family.
My Mom's family is a mixture of British, Irish, Native American and French.

Ancestry.com didn't really help me at all. I know that on my mom's side my grandfather came to America with his family from Portugal when he was 16 and that my grandmother came from Russia with her family when she was 4. On my dad's side I know my great grandmother (grandma's mom) came to America from Sweden and my great grandfather (grandma's dad) came to America from Norway. My great grandfather (grandpa's dad) was an orphan in Germany and he came to America when he was released from the orphanage. He married my great grandmother (grandpa's mom) who came to America from Ireland with her family. I am a mutt but I can't find any information further back than what I already know since they're in other countries.

My mom was born in Finland and her whole side of the family is Finnish.
Dad's side is a mix....mostly German. My great-grandfather came to the States from Germany after his older brother came, got settled, and sent for his mom and little brother.
DH's family is Irish and Swiss.
