More women are deciding to breastfeed their babies in hopes of providing them with all the health benefits that come from breast milk, but also to form a special bond with their babies.   Most women go into breastfeeding with a positive attitude and put an effort into doing things right.  Still, with all the effort, breastfeeding doesn’t always  go according to pl

I think waiting to get help is the #1 mistake many breastfeeding moms make. Just because breastfeeding is "natural" doesn't mean it comes naturally to everyone. It never hurts to ask your hospital's lactation consultant or call your local La Leche League leader for a second opinion when you need help. There are also online support groups (like the Breastfeeding board here on JustMommies) that you can post on to get advice from other moms.

what I noticed when I was first nursing my daughter was how many opportunities for giving formula there were almost everywhere! This is not a mistake on the mom's behalf but I do think it is important to set limits with the people around you and let them know it is NOT OK to suggest formula at the first sign of a struggle. Support is so important and the first few weeks mom is going through a huge hormonal shift and it is a really emotional time. It's easy to want to give up, especially if you have the people around you telling you that it's ok. It really is important to give it time.

It's difficult for many, but you just can't ignore the tremendous health benefits of nursing for the baby. This will affect them long-term as well as short-term.
