Did you travel to get the birth you wanted?

The hospital that is closest to me is the one we use. It's about a 7-12 minute drive (depending on traffic).

I've had two births there that were both very different, but I'm happy with both of them. I wasn't pressured into anything with either birth. The nurses were great--supportive, friendly, and accommodating. I choose it over one that is a little bit further away because it felt like they were better organized and they have a better NICU.

About 15 minutes.
I will never have the birth that I truly want due to health issues that are out of my control, but I was happy with the birth that I had.

About 15 minutes. We only have one hospital in our area...luckily they are willing to let me birth how I choose!

we drive almost an hour and a half this time - it was about an hour with Brylie. Same hospital, but the newer one just opened (sister hospital obviously) (I feel like I am not explaining this well...Brylie was born at the University Nebraska Medical Center - one of the biggest teaching/transplant/NICU hospitals in the country) and Bebo will be born at The Bellevue Medical Center - just opened in May 2010 It is much more birth center-y and my midwife is only delivering babes there now, which is why we transferred our care. It has tubs in every room though and allows water birth (UNMC allows water birth in the sense that "the midwives cant make a woman get out of the tub") but BMC has a water birth protocol

i wouldn't go to the 2 hospitals less than 30 minutes away if my life depended on it.....too much bad things associated with both places!!

The hospital we go to is about an hour away. There is one hospital that is about 20 minutes away but I wouldn't even bring my dog there. There's another hospital that is about a half hour away, but if anything were to go wrong with me or with the baby, we'd be sent to a different hospital because they aren't equipped to handle anything big happening there.

The hospital we do go to has a level 3 NICU.. which isn't something we ever thought we'd need, but we did with our 2nd and was so glad we were at a hospital that could care for him. They have a birthing center located in the hospital. They take the L&D rooms, Mom and Baby rooms (PP rooms), and the NICU and made sure to keep it all on one floor so that the Mom doesn't have to go far at all after she has baby.. even if baby needs the NICU. Everything there is centered around what the Mom (and Dad) want.. when they want it.. and how they want it done. I've had 3 baby's there and have never been disappointed!

With Kelly, my hospital was just 5 minutes away. Because we've since moved out to the country, there is nothing closer than 30 minutes away. I chose the hospital that is 35 minutes away because they have everything I want and are very supportive of the kind of birth that I want. I feel more comfortable there. The others, I feel uncomfortable with and something told me that if I stuck with them I'd end up with an experience I would not want. They have an in-hospital birth center...but all their rooms have tubs as well, so you can do water birth if you want.

If, god forbid, the baby came too early or something, we'd have to go to a different hospital...about 45 minutes away because they have the best NICU around and the one I'm going to doesn't have one at all. This hospital is great for that kinda thing, but if you're having a normal pregnancy, it's a scary place to be... 1 out of 3 first time moms come out with a c/s and more than half are induced, etc. It's just to medical.

Our midwives and hospital was 15 min away. But I would have been willing to travel much further if necessary.

The hospital I delivered Owen at was about 30 mins away. I was excited to deliver there since it's the best maternity center in the area, but it was nothing like I expected and will not ever go back.
