I had an episiotomy with my first, (she was big 9lbs)

I was wondering if you had an episiotomy do you get one the second time around?

You don't have to get one every time just because you had one with your first. You are more likely to tear along the scar line, but you may also not tear at all.

If you don't want one, just tell them to not do it. If you tear, they can stitch you up, if you don't tear, you'll have an easier recovery.

silver is dead on - you absolutely don't have to have one again. I would do perineal massage for the rest of your pregnancy, and lots of kegals...also ask your provider to guide you during pushing/use hot oil/compress during pushing to help minimize tearing!

I did have one with my first. It wasn't even offered. After I delivered I was informed by the doctor I had torn exactly as I would have if she would have cut me but I also tore inside along the vaginal wall. I'm not sure if getting an episiotomy would have prevented that. I think i'm going to just do it the same way this time around too. If i tear I tear if not than great!... but i am going to make sure i discuss it with my Doctor at my appointment AND right before we decide to start pushing.
