So...why do they do this? I know that within a half hour of being there the first time, the OB broke my water. With my 2nd I had a midwife and I know they broke it too, but I waited to go to the hospital for a while (he was born 4.5 hrs after I got in the room) and for my third I think they waited untuil after I had an epi and slept for a few hrs they broke it...I have to re-watch the video to be sure tho.
What is the point of breaking the water anyways?

it usually speeds up labor, but it also comes with serious risks.

After ROM the risk of infection goes up. The risk of cord prolapse happens. And labor usually gets harder after ROM.

Ok, so its mostly a way to get me in and out faster? Not sure how I feel about having it done again. All 3 of my previous L&D's they broke my water..although with #3 they waited a while longer, but I think that was cuz they were super busy and by waiting it let me sleep adn the On call dr either deal with other patients or sleep herself...

I was laboring alright on pitocin until they broke my bag of waters. Within minutes the pain became unbarable and I was begging for an epidural.
I think they did it because I had severe Pre-E and my blood pressure wouldn't stabalize.

I believe they usually do it to speed up labor, though maybe not in a negative way. I am no expert as my water broke on its own, but I know that sometimes when they break the water, it is because the woman isn't dilated enough and usually after it breaks, things can happen quick.

It tends to speed things up, that's why. Convenience. But like Chels said, it comes with risks.
