Around 2AM on Monday I started having some lower back pain. It was a lot like kidney pain/pressure so I figured Kenna was in a bad position and went to bed. It woke me up a few times, but I still didn’t think anything of it because sleep just hasn’t worked lately. When I woke up around 9 it was still off and on. When I went to lay back down at 11 I realized it was in a pattern, and then I had a lightbulb moment and realized I was having contractions 10 minutes apart. They did that almost all day. I called the on call doctor around 3 and was told to head up to the hospital when they got to 5 minutes apart. Two hours later we were on our way. The initial cervix check SUCKED. It hurt SO bad, and of course I got a contraction right then. About an hour later the nurse came back to inform me I have another UTI (grrr) which was definitely causing contractions, but if they weren’t making progress I’d be sent home. My goal was to get just one more centimeter out of them in order to stay. So me and Mom started walking the halls. I made about 4 laps when I just couldn’t move or talk during a contraction, and then started feeling nauseous during them. The doctor came in, decided he could make me a four, and I got to stay.
We decided I’d get some medicine for the nausea, as well as some Pitocen to help get things going and my epidural. A few minutes later the nurse hooked up my IV, then added that she was giving me something for the pain in addtion to the nausea stuff. Unexpected, but thought it was cool. Not a minute later, I felt like I haven’t felt unless I was drunker than drunk. It was a challenge to keep my eyes open. I had received a text message from Erin, read it, and by the time I hit reply I couldn’t even type. At that point my Mom took over my phone. Mom said I got demerol. Not getting that ever again. I don’t know how much later, but a little later they came in to do my epidural. It wasn’t bad at all, and I felt it kick in immediately. I liked the epidural. I didn’t feel drugged, just very very relaxed. It was amazing. About that time Zach came in. Then we all sat around talking and laughing and having a good old time. I have absolutely no concept of time at this point, but I know it was close to midnight. A little while later they came to check me and broke my water. Things went really fast after that. At next check I was an 8, then 30 minutes later I was complete. About 20 minutes after I started pushing she was out. As she was coming out it started a downpour. =)
She weighed 7lbs 11oz and 19 inches long. She’s so small, at least to us. Of course we’re used to big big babies. She’s been awesome though. One night in the hospital the fire alarm went off three times, and a helicopter landed and took off right by our room and she slept through it all. The car seat didn’t phase her a bit. And after the first day she’s nursed so well.
