August 3rd, 2009 just before 7p.m. I just got done playing a game of darts on the Wii when I went to the bathroom and my water broke. Me and Harley (my boyfriend and father of the baby) started rushing around making sure we had everything we needed for the hospital. I think I was in shock at that point because IT was finally happening!! On the drive to the hospital we called some family and friends and TRIED to listen to some music to relax a little. So we got up to the hospital and checked in and got a birthing room (lucky for me the triage was full!). Harley’s Mom got there right when I got my snazzy hospital gown on. I got my belly strapped with the baby monitors and the nurse said I was around 1cm dilated and I was in no pain at that point. The nurse told me that I had tested positive for Group B streptococcus (GBS), which I was told by the good ‘ol health department that it was negative. So they had to start an IV for penicillin that way the baby wouldn’t get it when I delivered. They also gave me pitocin to start inducing labor.
While we were waiting for the contractions to start Harley was in severe back pain and went down to the E.R. where he discovered he had several kidney stones. One of which he passed sometime during my labor. While Harley was gone I started feeling a few contractions I think around 3a.m. on the 4th, they sucked BAD!!! It was also lots of fun getting up to go pee because I had to be unhooked from the monitors and had to drag the IV machine around with me, which got annoying real quick. After a few hours of pain I couldn’t take it anymore and wanted some relief. The nurse checked me again and she said “you’re about 2cm dilated”. I was like ohh my gosh, all of this pain and I’m only at a 2 and I have to make it to 10. I said I thought I was going to die and asked if I could just have a c-section! So I finally got some pain medicine, which felt amazing.
So about 2 ½ hours later I couldn’t take the pain anymore again and definitely wanted an epidural. They called for someone to come down to do the epidural, which I was really excited for! I think it was around 10:45a.m. when the guy came to do it. It was kind of uncomfortable while he was putting it in but it was WELL worth it! The nurse checked me afterwards and I was at 5cm, which was further than I thought I would be. They put a catheter in me, which was weird but I was happy to not have to get up to pee anymore! After that I slept on and off for a while. Every 15 minutes the blood pressure cuff would go off and the nurse would come in to check my temperature and look at the monitors attached to my belly. Occasionally the nurse would check to see how far along I was. I progressed pretty well, about a c.m. an hour or so.
A little before 4p.m. when the nurse checked me I was about 9 ½ cm dilated so she told me to push. She said it was about time and went to go get the doctor and start setting up everything. Around 4p.m. my Mom came with her friend Iriz and surprised me (I thought she had to go to work). My Mom thought that the baby would have been born already by that time. Around 4:15p.m. I finally was able to start pushing! After a few pushes I remember Harley telling me that he could see some hair but as soon as I stopped pushing the baby would go right back up. The nurse stopped the medicine for the epidural so that I could feel the contractions so I would know when to push. As the epidural wore off the pain was horrible but at least I was nearing the end! The doctor had a lady with her that had to witness a birth so she could do some schooling or something, but anyways the lady really pissed me off. While I’m trying to give birth she’s talking about her life and her family in between watching and making comments on the discovery channel along with the doctor. I was SOOO annoyed! Finally I guess they decided it was time to pay attention to me, she had to use a vacuum on the baby’s head to try and help the baby out. I was so happy that when they took the catheter out I peed right on the doctor’s arm, LMAO!
At 5:59p.m. on August 4th, after almost 2 excruciating hours of pushing the baby finally came out. And SURPRISE! It’s a GIRL!!!! She had a hard time breathing on her own for less than a minute so I had to wait about 10 minutes to hold her. I think I was just completely exhausted and in shock at this point, it didn’t really hit me yet. Then I remember having to push out the placenta and the doctor showed it to me, I told her it looked like a steak, lol! She stitched me up and everything and then finally I got to hold my baby girl. She looked right at me (or so it looked like she did!) and that’s when I thought to myself that “I have a daughter”. It was an amazing feeling. She was wide awake and just perfect! Shortly after I remember asking my Mom if she wanted to hold her, I was so exhausted I thought I didn’t have the strength to hold her.
They took her away after a little while to get her weight and check her all out. She weighed 6lbs. 6oz. and was 19 1/2 inches long. I barely recall what happened after that. I remember talking to Harley’s Dad and my face feeling swollen from pushing and exhaustion and him making jokes at me because I was so out of it! I had to wait for the epidural to wear off before I could get up to shower or pee. I think it was about 2 hours later, after Harley’s Dad and Mom left when I finally could feel most of the feeling in my legs and they had me sit on this rolling chair/stand thing to go into the bathroom where I had to have my Mom help me shower. I never thought I wouldn’t care to have her help me shower, lol. After that they wheeled me through the nursery to see the baby real quick and then over to another room. I felt awesome after having a shower. My Mom and Iriz were last to leave shortly after 11:30p.m. I think. Then me and Harley had some time together and got to feed the baby before we finally got some sleep around 1a.m. Then around 5a.m. they brought the baby in so we could feed her again (which was okay because I needed help getting up to pee anyways!). Then at like 7a.m. I think it was shift change so doctors and nurses were coming in and out to check on me and do their routine checks. I felt a lot better after getting a bit of sleep. My Mom came again around 11a.m. I think to hang out for a couple hours before she headed back to Inverness. We had a few visitors throughout the day, it was nice!
So, I think I’ve made this long and detailed enough. I just wanted to share my story before I forgot the little details! I don’t remember when we talked about naming her. Sometime in the evening after she was born. I wanted her to be called either Marley Ann (Marley because it was close to Harley’s name and Ann is my middle name) or Emily Rose (we liked Emily and Rose is Harley’s Mom’s name). We decided on Marley and Harley really liked the name Amber and I did too so that’s what we named her. Marley Amber Burzynski, which in my mind is PERFECT!!!
