Who is planting watermelon?

We are skipping it this year. We always seem to have problems with them. At first they grow great, climbing our fence and the first year overtaking everything since we didn't know how much space they take up. But then we always get some little black bug that slowly kills them. So annoying.

Sounds like the aphids from this website but I guess maybe we catch it too late? I dunno.

So if you are planting, beware of the little black bugs.

Watermelon is so yummy but we would need to find a new bed for them anyways since our other areas are filled up already.

We did watermelon last summer and they do take off! I'm not planning on it this summer, but am going to do cantaloupe instead.

But lilly likes to get the ladybugs. She likes to pick them up but I need to teach her to do it gently because she squishes the poor things.

Oh and of course after I posted that I visited my parents and my dh planted a watermelon in one of our old beds. Just to prove me wrong I suppose.

We did them a lot when I was a kid- but I don't plan on doing them now unless my cantaloupes do not do well.

I think we will do pumpkins instead of watermelons. Audrey has the same issue with picking up lady bugs. She ends up squishing them!

This would be fun to try though...

I planted some seeds (wrong I know) and they were immediatly dug up by squirrels, but I noticed something that looked like this the other day and I think one is surviving!
