Hi ladies. I've posted in here a few times and often lurk. My little one just turned a year old (Monday) and is sitting just over 14lbs. He was born 4lbs 1oz so he has more than tripled his birthweight. I've always been bothered by how small he was but just assumed that he would catch up. Well he met with the Gastroenteroligist at 11 months and had only gained 2oz in a month. He switched my son from formula to pediasure. He went back at 1 year and had gained NOTHING . The doctor started mentioning malnutrition and feeding tube and just really scared me. He has an endoscopy scheduled for this upcoming Monday and I'm really hoping for answers. He's also throwing up at least once a day....and I mean really throwing up, out his nose and mouth and dry heaving. I'm thinking it's b/c the pediasure is not thick enough...he was used to Enfamil AR.

Has anyone had similar experiences w/ their LO's? Anyone else's LO near 14lbs at one year?

Hi. My daughter was similar. She weighed 4lbs 4oz at birth. I can't remember her exact weight at her first birthday, but she was a - 3rd-5th percentile runt. She was diagnosed with FTT at around eleven months and given pediasure, which she would tolerate for awhile and then go through periods where she threw up constantly. ( The pediatrician said this is common for kids on special diets to become intolerant of them). My daughter never took solid foods and still doesn't.
Therefore, she is tube feed. Does your son eat solids? If so have you tried high fat foods like avocados and butter.

It may be an intorerance to a protien which they may be able to tell from the Endoscopy. Try high calorie foods if he will eat them and try to keep him eating table food if he does now. That is the biggest problem with Danny was keeping him eating as well as taking his formula. Danny didn't have the same weight but was 8lb. 1.8 oz at birth and hit a plateau at 21.5 pounds from 7 months until 21 months. He then started Neocate Jr. and gained 2 pounds in 2 weeks and stayed the same for another 8 months...this past week he had finally gained 7 ounces. Point being even though he isn't as small as your LO I understand the whole idea of he has gained enough (relatively) but stopped growing afterwards...I would wait until the Endo results come back and see if anything obvious comes up. Are they doing a ph probe at the same time? If so that will help determine as well if he is vomiting due to reflux (acid) or allergies(bile, mucous, food) and set a course from there on out.

He doesn't really eat solids...he wants to but he still gags and can't really tolerate anything w/ texture.

My daughter does the same thing. She's been on a feeding tube for 1 year now. She'll be three in January and weighs 23 lbs. She's still really small and even with the tube it's a struggle, but she's been growing slowly and has actually made it onto the growth chart.
Have you contacted ECI? We've found them to be a great support. Tube feeding is a really tough pill to swallow for a mother, but you have to understand this has nothing to do with your parenting. Your son may just need a little more time and help to figure it out. Here's a great website.

My daughter was 14lbs at her one year appt, she has had every test done and everything has always come back negative, so we have chalked it up as she is going to be small her whole life.
otherwise she is very healthy...
I hope you get some answers soon, I know how frustrating it can be.
((((hugs))))

I really hope you get some answers soon. My LO was 5lbs 1oz at birth and 16lbs at 12 months. He's 29.5 months and weighs 21lbs now. He is a pain to feed. Anyways, sorry I don't have much advice to offer. I share your frustration though.
