I'm new at this, but I am hoping that someone can help. My daughter has been diagnosed with FTT but the Dr can't seem to find a cause. Her DOB is 5/10/06. When I took her for her 9 mo appt in Feb they sent us to a cardiologist because she weighed 13lb 12oz. Her heart was fine so they sent us to an allergist, no significant food allergies that would be causing her problems.
So when I took her in today for her 1 yr check she weighed 16lb 6 oz and was 26 3/4 in long. They now tell me that she has to be checked for growth hormone deficiency because she has fallen off the charts in her height as well as her weight.

Has anyone had these tests? Or know anyone diagnosed with Growth Hormone Deficiency? She is thriving otherwise, talking standing, trying to walk.
Any help to calm my nerves would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Christy

I don't think Aidan was tested for that, but honestly, she's had so many tests done I only really know the big ones. How is your daughter's appetite? Does she eat well? What does she eat? Has she had any other health problems? I ask that because it seems odd to me that the first specialist you would be sent to is a cardiologist.

We have never had it done but I wanted to tell you good luck. I agree that it seems odd that they would send you to a cardiologist first. Was there another reason for that? I hope that you can get things worked out and she starts gaining some weight.

It does seem odd that your doctor has sent you to these kinds of specialists before testing for more basic things. Or have they tested for other things? It seems like your daughter is doing the opposite of mine. Mine is growing like a weed without gaining any weight, but your daughter made tremendous progress weight-wise in the last three months. I have nothing useful to say, just good luck with the tests! Hope all is well. Oh, and welcome to JM!

Ditto to the other girls. We've never done that/those tests, my son's height has stayed on the chart while his weight has not. Good luck, I hope you can find someone to give you more information.

Paige has had some blood tests that test some hormones. She is also going to be having a bone scan to see what her bone age and bone growth is. They are checking this because I have a growth hormone deficiency and it can be hereditary. They do not believe she has a growth hormone deficiency though because she is getting taller...she is just not gaining weight well.
Basically with me...from what my mom has told me...I stopped growing in Kindergarten and didn't grow or gain weight at all for 2 years. At that time they sent me for numerous blood tests, CT's, etc. They determined that I had a growth hormone deficiency. My parents however chose not to do the hormone treatment because at the time it was still somewhat new and no one knew the long term side effects. So I was never treated. I am now 4ft9 and prior to my first preg I weighed about 80lbs. I look much younger than I am. It has never really bothered me being short...however it used to bother me that I look so young because I would...and still do...get strange looks from people that think I am a preg teenager!! I am actually 26 (will be 27 in Aug). I don't remember much about the tests that I had other than that I had to go to a Children's hospital and be stuck with many needles many times.
Do you have any family history of growth hormone deficiency? It does seem odd that they would be checking this so soon instead of just giving her a little time to catch up. Have they tested for other things yet?
If you have any specific questions please feel free to post here or PM me.

Thanks for all the support. They wanted to test her when she was 10 mo old, but at my insisting they held off. I just felt like we should give her some time before forcing her to be stuck and poked with a lot of needles. I had to take her to the office that we normally visit so they could weigh her on the scales they have been using to ensure that we have an accurate and reliable weight. So while I was there I had them re-check her height b/c I wasn't confident in the nurse yesterday. Today she weighed 16lb 7.5 oz, that's 1.5 oz more than yesterday and she was 27.5 in long, 26 3/4 yesterday, a huge difference. The new height puts her in the 5th percentile which means that she is back on the chart

As for why they sent her to the cardiologist first they said that sometimes FTT babies have a small hole in the heart which makes their bodies work harder to pump the blood and burn more calories than their bodies should. That came back fine...no problems with her heart. The allergist determined that she is allergic to eggs and peanuts, though the peanut allergy is not severe. So there were no problems noted there either. Those are the only tests that they have done on her and she continues to eat like crazy.

That is a BIG difference in height. I would recommend that they measure her height more than once in future appts. That happened with B once. They told me he lost length (on his computer chart)...I was like, um, no... I make sure they double check if I think it looks off. That's good news about her height!

Anna was measured yesterday, and the measured an entire 2 inches shorter than she did two weeks ago. Who knows which one is right!
