We just spent 3 days in the hospital. They wanted to test Ben for several different things to see why he wasn't gaining weight. At 6 weeks old he was only 2 oz more than his birth weight.
They tested for Cystic Fibrosis, infections, kidney and liver problems. Everything came back negative so they think the problem is that he wasn't getting enough calories. He was solely breastfed. He had been pretty jaundice when he born and it lasted for quite a while. That made him sleepy to he didn't eat like he was supposed to. Because he didn't eat enough those first few weeks he didn't gain enough strength to nurse enough as he got older so it was like a vicious cycle.
Now I BF for 10-15 minutes per breast and then offer BM or formula in a bottle after every feeding. I pump after every feeding. Sometimes we skip one breast feed and give a whole bottle of BM or formula while I pump. This helps me keep some breast milk stored.
Our goal is too eventually get back to only BM. He gained 7 oz while in the hospital so that was a relief! We have appts on Monday and Tuesday so hopefully he will continue to gain weight or they will hospitalize him again.
Aw, hon, what a rough week you guys have had! My son had jaundice at birth too so I know what all that is like. 7oz while he was in the hospital is great though! My niece (she is 3 days younger than your son) is having to do weight check every other week because of vomiting. My SIL has already been through all this with her son too so I really understand how stressful it can be. Please keep us posted on how he's doing with his weight. I bought a baby scale to keep at home to keep track of how well Brandon was doing, that might seem a bit much to some people though.
