all came back normal. I am starting to think these docs are nuts and my daughter is fine. We weighed her yesterday and she was 22lbs. She was only in the 3rd percentile, so if she drops any, she will go under the curve. Well if some kid was int he 50th and dropped to the 40th, no one would say anything!.

So we are sticking with she is fine. WEe still have a GI appt. on the 9th that we will go to, but the doc. wants to do a biospy. I see no reason why a healthy acting toddler needs a biopsy done!

It's possible nothing is wrong with her. They never found anything wrong with Brandon, he wouldn't eat a lot, so he wouldn't gain a lot. They threatened a biopsy with him, too, but never went thru with it. Can you get a second opinion?

Everything came back normal for Anna too. Like Nichole, she is a perfectly healthy, normal toddler--just really, really small. Of course, for her, she obviously doesn't eat very much. I too think a biopsy is a little extreme. We've never had one suggested for Anna, and we're trying to get her *UP* to the 3rd percentile. She's seen many, many people (two peds, a GI, two nutrionists, and a whole feeding team), and no one suggested one. I'd get another opinion before doing something like that.

I agree, seems like just tiny babies to me!!
How big is Anna again?
Nichole eats a good amount. Probably better then most toddlers in my opinion. She isn't picky and will eat full meals with us. I just htink she is tiny.

Anna was about 19 1/2 lbs at 19 months. That's a big improvement of where she was. She's finally on the right track. I can't wait to pass that 20 lb mark!

Nichole does sound small for someone with a big appetite, but I would go with your gut, I think. If she's energetic, healthy, thriving, and her bloodwork is all clear, then I think you've covered pretty much all your bases!

Nichole was just a tad bigger then Anna then. She hit 20 lbs at her 18 month check up, no ounces though! I wouldn't say she eats like a horse just a good eater ya know? She grazes a lot during the day. She doesn't eat much breakfast but other then that, she eats pretty darn good. lol

I would not do a biopsy on an otherwise healthy child. Too invasive. I would go with less invasive testing and OT. Do blood tests and have a dietiacian look at her intake way before you agree to a bioopsy. Remember they can't do anything without your consent
We will be doing a muscle bioopsy for our little girl. But she has other issues, low tone, wears braces to walk and had a stroke during her first year.

Not sure if this makes you feel any better but my doc has threatened with a biopsy and/or barrium swallow too. My daughter has had normal tests and we are working on supplementing her diet, but if she does not gain at the rate my GI doc feels is necessary, she will probably have the biopsy. My understanding is that it can rule out Celiac Disease and malabsorption (sp?) issues. I agree with you - if a kid seems healthy and is thriving in every other way, then why such an invasive test?

thanks for the replies ladies!!

Pat:We have done all the other blood testing and intake. They know it is malabsorption of some form, just don't know what yet. Some of the biggest possibilities is Celiac, carbohydrate intolerance, and food allergy. This GI has not ran carbohydrate or allergy panal, when I question why, she said they wanted to do a biopsy first then if that is negative do the allergy testing!!! I think that is ridiculous!! I hope your daughter has as easy a biopsy as can be!! And that everything checks out fine

nn: I hope your child does not have to go through a biopsy and starts gaining weight well!

We are going to an allergist behind the gi's back next Thursday! So hopefully this will end our road trip of crap! lol I will let you all know how it goes! They will do the testing same day so we will have some answers, even if it is negative!

I'm glad to hear that the tests came back normal. We have the same situation here. Carly is in the 5th percentile and all of her test came back fine.

somebody has to be in the 5th or there wouldn't be one! Is your baby healthy other then the weight or do they have reason to believe something else might be wrong?

She is just fine other than weight. She was having some major diarrhea, but that stopped when we switched her to soy. The doctor did not think the two are related though I agree some kids has to been small...but these doctors don't see it that way.

I do think some kids are just meant to be small. Thats what they thought with Anastasia at first. She's not in any percentile, she's fallen completely off the charts. Chris, my husband, and I are both small so I am hoping that is why she is too.

I bet that is the reason why they are all small. We canceled her GI appointment, it was suppose to be tomorrow then they reschedules to the end of hte monthl. They must not be that concerned if they can go 2 months between seeing her and haven't had any suggestions on diet change or what not. So I said we would not be going and we would call if we had any problems. Her 2 year appointment is around the 20 somehting or other, so I will look at her weight then
