I am told by the doctor that Carly is "below the 5th percentile". Is that a normal term? Why don't she say the 4th, 3rd, 2nd? I am going to ask about it the next time I take her in.

I think it depends on what chart they use. The ones that most pediatricians use I think only draws in the parts from 5th to 95th percentile. The feeding team I go to has a more detailed chart that they use that also has all the ratio breakdowns, etc. Even then, they would usually tell me "below the 3rd percentile." Sometimes I wonder if the 1st and 2nd percentile is ever used in that context because that is where many children with illnesses are, etc., so it's not a useful designation anymore when talking about a healthy range of weight? I don't know. I just know the feeding team has been working with us with the 3rd percentile as our goal.

The way my doctor explained it was...

Anastasia is not even on the charts. She's technically in the "negative percentile" is what she said. However, that makes no sense (she's smaller than any child her age, and no child her age will ever be smaller????!!! ) Thats why they say less than 3rd or 5th because it wouldn't make sense to have them in the 0 or -, you know?

There are a few charts! My dd has been 3rd percentile pretty much her whole life! Somebody has to be at the bottom.
I would only care about the particular child and that they grow on a curve, no matter what that curve is, above or below the line kinda hting!

Paige is not even close to being on the charts. They usually say below the 5th percentile for her too.
