So I have two dogs. A long haired dachsund named Rusty that I've had since 1998. And a little shih tzu that's less than a year old. Okay...last night I came home from work. My dachsund Rusty started hacking like he had a hairball. So I told him to "go outside" as soon as I say this he starts yelping like he's hurt. So I freak out. He won't let me touch him or check him. He runs into the little pup's kennel. AND WON'T COME OUT!!! All night he stays in there even with me trying to get him to come out with treats and other things. I wake up this morning. Still won't come out. My dh is out of town on business. He's had to travel alot these past 3 weeks and has only been home like 5 days during this whole time.

I go to work and worry all day. I think the worst. He's almost 11 years old. I come home. He's still in the stupid kennel. I called the vet and they see me. They check him over. Diagnosis: He's depressed. They think because my dh has been gone a lot. WHAT???? He's my dog. My husband has only been in the picture the past 3 1/2 years...with a year in Iraq. WTH???? Sorry...I'm not sure if I'm in disbelief over the dx or over the fact that my puppy loves my husband more

Awe, I'm sorry Rusty isn't being himself!!!!

Maybe he's depressed about the new pup? I know my parent's older dog went crazy when they added the new puppy into the mix. She still acts weird, and they've had the puppy for over a year.

I hope Rusty is back to himself really soon!!!!

Hey I just thought I'd let you know that I'm not a veterinarian but I do work in the veterinary field and I have for the last 5 1/2 years. A lot of times when we see these situations, especially with dachshund's, it's due to either heart issues or a back/neck problem. I'd say that if he doesn't improve that I'd take him back in. I'm sorry your little dog is going through this. By the way I have two shih tzu's they are FANTASTIC dogs. They have great personalities and they are soooooo good with my little boy. Good luck with your dachshund. It's so hard to see your little furbabies go through these kinds of things.

aww, poor thing.
all 4 of my dogs listen to DH way better than me--and they were all here way before he was.
sometimes they won't come inside--i have to say to them "Aaron wants you to come in!" and they walk right in!
ugh!

Thats too funny. Maybe he isnt too attached to DH, but he is attached to the family that you all make? and thats what he is missing. Hope he gets back to normal soon.

Of course he's back to normal. My husband arrived home last night. (After all the American Airline crap). He's running around like nothing was wrong. My dh thinks it's hilarious. He's always teasing saying Russ is his dog and Cipher is mine. (The puppy is crazy because it's a puppy) Anyway...thanks all for letting me vent. My dog of 10 years has found a new favorite person
