These two little guys have been making quite a racket. I heard them a couple days ago and honestly thought they were birds being noisy. Well yesterday Dave looked out and said "we have baby squirrels" at first I was elated until I realized they were noisy because they were abandoned. These little guys have some lungs on them! I got out of work yesterday at 7pm and planned on capturing them and calling animal control if the mom was still no where to be found. Well at that point the babies were gone.
I worried all night and at about 2am heard two squeals. I fell asleep knowing they were alive. This morning I took the pup outside to see if we could find them. Within 2 minutes Chevy was barking under the deck. I took a peek and sure enough.... one tiny squirrel was the cause of the bark. I tried to talk Chevy into bringing me the baby so that I didn't have to belly crawl 16 feet to the baby. Yes 16 feet. UGH Let me tell you I tried my best to explain this to Chevy. I am not a fan of dirt. He on the other hand loves dirt. So I figured he would be better at it than me. Well he wanted notning to do with that idea. Either that or he wanted to see if I could actually belly crawl 16 feet. So cat carrier in hand, gloves on and wearing one of my favorite sweatshirts with my favorite flip flops.... I start the crawl. The cat carrier, while a must made the belly crawl take even longer. What felt like a year later I had wedged the cat carrier in place so I could easily put the tiny baby in. He had to be the sweetest squirrel I have ever seen. Okay I admit he is the only baby squirrel I have ever seen, but sute none the less.
I picked the little guy up with the fashionable gardening gloves one of the kids was nice enough to leave laying around for me. He was like a little kitten. He latched on to me and did NOT want to be put in that carrier. Once I got him in the fun began. How do you back 16 feet out of the underside of a deck with not only a cat carrier, but a fragile squirrel in said carrier? Have I mentioned yet that I am the most ungraceful person you could ever meet? I eventually go out of under the deck and had a good look at the baby. He didn't look good at all. I called animal control and got the answering machine.
Being the *girl* that I am, I decided I really didn't want animal control seeing me unshowered with no make-up on. So cat carrier and cell phone in hand I took him into the bathroom with me. We had a nice long talk through the shower door. Well I talked and he squealed.
Now that I had my hair washed and my make-up on I decided to take him outside to wait for the call. I was hoping to find his brother while waiting. I wasn't as worried about him because the day before he looked to be in better shape. He didn't make me wait long. He started squealing as soon as I sat down. He too was under the deck. At that point I pretty much said no way in hedoublehockeysticks was my butt going back under the deck.
Then animal control called back. The guy was nice but told me there really wasn't anything they could do. He said if they came to get them they in all reality would be put to sleep. He said there was a rehabilitator in a nearby town that might be able to take them. He gave me the phone number and I hung up worried that things were not looking good.
I tried the number and the line was busy. Right about then the second little guy decided to make him self known. He came out from under the deck (PHEW!) and started playing with a cap to a container the kids had left outside. At that point my neighbor came out and I told her what was going on. By the time I was done talking to her the second little guy had fallen asleep next to the top. I went over and walked softly thinking he would startle and run. Poor little guy was so tired and weak he didn't even hear me coming. I picked him up with my fashionable gloves and put him in with his brother. I called the rehab place and finally got through. They said I could bring them right in. So I hopped in the car and drove the 25 minutes to the Irondequoit Animal Hospital

My squirrel babies and I had a nice long talk on the way.
As I waited in a line about 10 people long to *check in* one lady making conversation said "So what do you have in the carrier?" She was not expecting to hear, when I responded "two baby abandoned squirrels". I figured everyone would love baby squirrels. Right? Nope. Just about everyone inched further away!
It was finally my turn and I figured I would at least be able to tell their story for them. I guess it doesn't work like it does on Animal Planet. I handed the lady at the counter the carrier and she handed me a form to fill out. By the time I was done the empty carrier was returned and I was left to go home with an empty arms.
I am going to call in a day or so and see if they are okay. I feel like a crazy squirrel lady though. They will probably think I am off my rocker! So here are the babies......
This was the weaker of the two yesterday before I knew for sure they were abandoned....
and his brother....
and the first rescue....
and his brother who was nice enough to not make me crawl!
So that was my day.... aren't they cute???
