CALL FOR BONE MARROW DONORS!!
If anyone is interested in being tested for the National Bone Morrow registry, there is a campaign going on right now through May 18th where you can send for a kit and it will be mailed to your home. All you have to do is a cheek swab and send it back. There usually is a fee of $75, but it is FREE until the 18th. The website is www.marrow.org there will be something on there to fill out to receive the kit in the mail. It seems pretty simple and can save a life. Please consider doing this.
I signd up for the registry today. It took about 10 minutes. It asks some basic health questions. It will ask for ssn & driver's license number (which I didn't have with me & it let me process anyway). It also asks for 2 contact people who live in a different address in the event they are looking for you and you have moved. After completing the forms, a message popped up that I would be receiving my kit in less than a week. The kits include 4 cotton swabs, directions and a postage paid envelope to return them in. Please consider joining this registry.

I'm bumping this post!
I've been on the bone marrow list since 2000 - but being able to register with just a cheek swab is awesome! There are so many ppl out there that need a transplant and you may be their savior!

I'm glad you put this up here! I've always wondered about this.
I went and looked, and unfortunately I'm an unacceptable donor. My clotting disorder excludes me.

I believe you have to be between 18-60 to register. I'm not 100% but I they only use younger donors for family members/known recipients. Thanks for trying ladies - this is a wonderful thing to do. There are children & adults waiting and dying everyday because they don't have a donor.

Jeremy will be 18 in a year. If he can't do it now I will be sure to have him think about it again next year. When I told him about it tonight.... he said *Sign me up* I can deal with a little pain to save someones life. I guess I did good with him

I tried, but it won't let me because I'm in Canada, and their international link didn't list Canada.

I just signed up and it still worked so they must not have hit their limit yet. I wish Travis would have signed up too but he said no Oh well, since I am Filipino, Japanese, and Italian maybe I have higher odds of being able to help someone Thanks for sharing!

There were a few questions/comments here that I thought I'd respond to. But I am not an expert - I don't even work in health care, I work in recruiting!
Brandi, to join the International Unrelated Bone Marrow Donor's list in Canada, you need to contact the Canadian Blood Services. You will first attend a 1 hour info session, and then they will send you for blood tests.
I'm not sure if you need to be 18, but I wouldn't be surprised. It's a big decision to make.
I joined the list not because a loved one needed a bone marrow transplant, but because there is such a need for donors. If you belong to a specific ethnic group especially (e.g. Aboriginal, Asian, African American, etc). For some reason unrelated donors are more easily found within similar ethnic groups.
I joined because I feel that if I can save someone's life I would do it in a heartbeat - stranger or not. However, my kidneys are reserved for family!
