Would it be a common thing for an insurance to consider pregnancy a "pre-existing" condition and therefore not pay for it, if you were pregnant when your coverage started?

The reason why I am asking is because DH is graduating this December. He will probably be able to get a job fairly quickly (he's got a few contacts he made at a conference last October, who would have been interested but couldn't be because he wasn't graduating yet), and hopefully we'll get decent insurance from that job.

I was just wondering how likely it would be for them to deny maternity coverage if I was pregnant already when they would hire DH.

What do you think?

I'm not completly sure, I don't know if it varies from insurance to insurance. I want to say that pregnancy is a pre-existing condition, but you might still be able to get coverage because it's a pregnancy. I hope someone else has better info than me. I'll check my insurance and I'll see what I can find out.

Eeeek!!!! I hadn't thought about that!! LOL!

DH is going in for yet another interview for the CHP academy and *crossing fingers* soon we should know if he's made it or not. After that, if he does, he will head to the academy for 12 (or is it 16?) weeks and then into a job with the CHP and if I am in fact pregnant.. oh boy! LOL

I know when we were military and I got pregnant before our coverage with them stopped, they said it didn't matter, they would not continue to cover me.

Hmmm.. GOOD QUESTION! I am curious to see other responses to this!

This is what I found out from my health insurance company. Hope it helps some.
Is pregnancy a waivered condition?A waivered condition is excluded from coverage for charges and expenses incurred during the six-month period beginning as of the effective date of coverage. A waivered condition only applies to a condition for which medical advice, diagnosis, care or treatment (including prescription drugs) was recommended or received from a licensed health practitioner during the six months immediately preceding the effective date of coverage. With Access+ Value HMOSM and Access+ HMO®, pregnancy is a waivered condition. Therefore, benefits for pregnancy and maternity services are not covered for the six-month period from the effective date of coverage, with the exception of services required to treat involuntary complications of pregnancy. However, if you have prior creditable coverage and you apply for coverage within 63 days after termination of prior coverage, Blue Shield will credit the length of time you were covered on your previous health plan toward the six-month period. Please note that for Vital ShieldSM 2900, Active StartSM Plans 25 and 35, EssentialSM plans, BalanceSM plans and Shield Spectrum PPO Savings Plan 4000/8000, pregnancy and maternity benefits are not covered.

I have been told both things. The biggest concern though with insurance is that they will not cover you if you don't have any prenatal care during the first trimester. They figure you to be too HIGH RISK then.

There is medicaid and they will cover most pregnant women if they are not covered by other insurance. I guess it is a way to make sure baby is healthy. Now after the baby is born you will lose your coverage, but the baby would still be able to get shots and such.

There is always a way if there is the will!! I say just go for it and things will work out!!

I was on medicaid for both my previous pregnancies. Erin is still on it right now. But...with the type of job we're looking at he will likely be making too much for us to qualify. A good friend of his just got a job with one of the companies he was talking to, so I've asked him to ask for details on what's covered and what isn't.
