As some of you know, I'm writing a book. (It's probably never going to get published or anything, but...hey, it's fun to write) Anyway, I'm nearing a part where the focal character is going to have some wine for the first time in her life. The only problem is....I've never had wine. I don't drink, and never have.
So, could you lovelies please describe (with as much detail as possible) what your favorite wine tastes like? Tell me what kind it is too. And...weird question, I know, but can you also describe getting a little tipsy? =Þ
Thanks in advance!

Britt,
Well, maybe I can be of some use... Last May, my husband and I went to Europe for the first time. As we were planning our trip (several months before) we both decided that we wanted to enjoy the local life, which we belived included drinking wine. Neither of us had ever had wine before, so it wasn't that long ago that I tasted it for the first time. Here are some of my thoughts on wine...
The first wine I tasted was a red wine (a cabernet sauvignon). It tasted very bitter to me and it left my mouth with the sensation that their was tree bark left inside my mouth. It was really not a pleasant experience. I was told that all wines taste very differently, so I decided (on a different occasion) to try some white zyphandel. I liked this one much better. It was very sweet (but not at ALL like grape juice). When it is nice and cold, it has the "crisp" feeling in your mouth. If you taste wine before you eat food and after you eat food, it tastes very differently. I generally like the taste of wine before food, but I have to be careful, because it doesn't take much before I can feel it in my head. When I start feeling a little tipsy, it just feels like my head is filling with air (slowly from bottom to top) just after I take a swallow. The "air" slowly deflates and then the process repeats itself (as long as I drink it slowly). If I take a lot all at once, I just get dizzy. Now, my favorite wines are white wines -- riesling and pinot grigio. If you are trying to describe a wine that the character likes, you can use words like soft, sweet, fruity (sometime strange fruits, like pears and peaches -- not always grapes), crisp. To be honest though, I'm not sure if anyone really LOVES wine the first time you taste it. I think it is kinda like beer, it's an acquired taste.
If I can think of more descriptions, I'll let you know. In fact, maybe I'll have some wine tonight.

I agree, that really was wonderful! lol. Thank you! That was exactly what I needed. And I figured it was probably an acquired taste, but wasn't sure, so thanks for telling me that too!

Brittanie,
Wish that I could be of some help but I am a non drinker as well. To much drinking in my family growing up has kept me away from the stuff, sorry!!!
Loved the info from the wine drinker though, so amusing to hear what wine tastes like.

My favorite wine at the moment is White Cat... but it is a NY wine and most people would think you grew two heads if you wrote about it
I love sweet wine and Riesling is on of my favs.

There is the link to NY state wine web sites. It might be helpful.
I agree about the dry reds in oak. Tree bark all the way! Dave loves them though. ( Even the reds done in stainless steel barrels are sometimes gross!)
Want to see some wine country pics for inspiration?

The place that makes White Cat...
I can help more later... we have soccer soon, so I am out of time

Red wine has avery "peppery" taste...it can almost be spicy...
But I love Asti type wines...I can't remember my favorite brand but its almost like champagne...I drink it at New Years....
ETA: Just remember the brand name...its Martini and Rossi Asti...

I'v never thought of it quite like that, but I can see how you would think that with red wines.

Okay, so...what sort of meals would you have a white wine with? Do you care what food you have with what wine? I know restaurants always say that this wine would go with this meal, but is that true?

Well, most people say "if you like it with a certain food, go for it", but there is some traditional thinking to indicate white wine goes better with chicken and fish and red wine goes better with steak.
