Monsoons are here. We live in Tempe, Arizona. For those who dont know, Tempe boarders Phoenix to the East (Southeast?). Yesterday I wanted to go out and get some new curtins for the family room. Needless to say we got home hours later and I didnt get any curtins.
What it looked like when we left home at 3:30 PM
About two mintues later (all taken from my phone)
when we got on the freeway I said to Hubby. Notice there is never rain water on the freeways? This is about a minute later. Notice this car is not going the same direction we are (this is a divided freeway). Thats because this idiot was going about 100MPH and did about 5 360's before his car slammed to a stop on the side retension wall. (See the water on the ground?)
Getting off at the Mall Exit. Hubby was going to let us off at the door and park the car. It seemed like a good idea.
The green light is where the mall turn in is at. the parking lot was so flooded that Hubby would have never found a dry place to park. So we decided we were going to go home before the rain got any worse. This was about 2 minutes after we got off the freeway.
We get back on the freeway and after we get on we see one of those ADOT signs that says the freeway is closed at CC Drive. So we move to the right to get off on the 1st exit. Traffic starts to stop. We figured it was an accident because CC drive is in Mesa and that is about 7 exits away. I didnt stop to think that CC Drive is a elevated point on the freeway and where we are is a low point. So all the water is running in our direction. The situation is getting bad very quickly.
This one was taken about one minute later (the truck is in the emergancy lane)
This was taken about 3 or 4 mintues later.
This is a 7 lane freeway (each direction) We are in the far left lane. Not the left lane....the small strip to the left hand side of the left lane. We were inches from the side wall and the water was so high I thought it was going to come into the car.
We are driving thru it and can feel the car shifting sideways. Nice! We get thru it and drive over the embankment to get off on that exit.
This is what we found on the surface streets.
We ended up having to pull over at a QT Gas station and waiting it out for quite a while. Cars were getting stuck everywhere. We saw a van floating (too far away and my phone couldnt get the picture). We also saw so many cars get stuck in the water. There was no way I was letting hubby drive my car thru that water. We finally got back on the road and went over to another 2 streets because they just finished the light rail system there and thought it would have been constructed better to handle water because of the train.
These are news footage photos of the freeway we were on. These are the cars that didnt get to pass.
