What are your thoughts on teachers paddling children at school?

I don't agree either, I think it teaches violence I think there are other ways to punish a child if needed without using violence.

I disagree as well. I was just curious about what other people thought. At the elementary school that our kids go to, you sign a slip saying whether or not your child is allowed to be paddled. This is something new that they have done. When DH and I first got married, my stepdaughter got a paddling at school for defending herself while the other child didn't get anything at all. We only knew about it because the school sent home a note saying that she had been paddled and we had to sign it and return it. She had been being picked on everyday and finally she just got tired of it and stood up for herself. Come to find out, the teacher knew that she was being picked on and when we confronted the teacher, she claims that she thought the problem had been taken care of!!!! I was sooooo angry at that teacher. Now we don't have to worry about that because both of our children are on the NO PADDLING LIST.

Wow, I thought it was illegal for teachers to paddle students anymore. It's completely inappropriate!

Wow. I am against it and I am shocked that they even allow it, regardless of whether the parents have consented.

I don't know about everywhere else, but here, they are still allowed to paddle with parents consent. It's crazy.

I think for the school or a teacher to do it is absolutly inappropriate. I think if a parent chooses this as one option in their home thats up to them, but a stranger shouldnt ever be allowed to inflict pain on someone's child, and the parents who agree to it are equally as rediclous.

No way should paddling be allowed in schools. There is too big of an opportunity to seriously injure a child and for a teacher to take advantage of this "power" they are given.

As long as my kid doesn't come home with bruises, go for it. I won't tolerate my future child(ren) acting out in school just because mom & dad are not around.
I saw an episode on TruTV called the Principal's Office. The high school kids could pick getting paddled three times, or come in for Saturday detention.

I had no idea it was allowed, with consent or not. I don't agree with it. I'll discipline my own children, thank you very much. (Although I do feel for teachers, because I'm sure not all the kids are disciplined at home)

I didn't know that this was legal anywhere in the developed world! I'm actually shocked!

I am all for kids getting paddles at school. I wish more places would do it.
BTW both DH and I were paddled at school.

I am wishy washy on this topic. As a teacher myself I cannot imagine paddling a child at work, but I will definitely paddle my own children in extreme situations. When I worked with 4-5 year olds I wished I could give them a good smack on the tush every once in a while b/c it was clear they had no discipline at home. In theory, it really only teaches violence, but sometimes some kids need that every once in a while to get their attention. I have never hit a child though so I don't know if I could do it.

you don't have to worry about anyone "flaming" you. I am not trying to start a debate by any means. I was just curious how everyone felt about it. Everyone has the right to their own opinion.
