I went and seen my hematologist today. Little background information: I have ITP, which is basically low platelets. I was hospitalized in February 2008, because my platelets were at 3,000 normal is (150,000-400,000). As you probably know platelets are what cause you blood to clot if you were to get cut. I basically had no platelets. I was given platelets in the hospital and than put on prednisone for 9wks. Right before my D&C in September they checked my count and it was 150,000. And today..3months later it's at 178,000. Woo hoo it went up!!
He was going to release me from his care, until i said 'We're trying to have a baby'. Then he so 'Oh i'm not releasing you then'. Because platelets can start to plummet again during pregnancy. He said the ITP can cross over to the placenta and effect the baby and the baby could get low platelets.
I have to go back in 6mos (July), and hopefully i'll be pregnant by that point. He said throughout the pregnancy he'd have me come in for blood draws. If my counts start to go to low he'd put me on low doses of prednisone and then just prior to delivery i'd be given an infusion of IVIG (platelets through IV).
