Ok, I shouldn’t even care, but it hit me weird. I was watching “17 Kids and Counting” (the Duggers) last night. They were speaking at a church in CA about how they found God and why they do what they do. They did not show the whole speech, but they did show Michelle saying that they lost a baby because of her taking BCP between babies. It sounded like she was blaming miscarriages on BCP. It hit me weird, because so many of us have had to take BCP at some point to help PREVENT just that.
Has anyone ever heard of this? I know when I went on BCP before DH and I got married, I asked a million questions about it causing any problems, and was told that if anything it would help[ by completely regulating me. I got upset because it sounded like putting misinformation out there.

BTW if you haven't seen it, the Duggers are a super religious couple who now have 18 kids.

I didn't see that particular interview, but I've heard her make similar statements before. I think it was coincidence that she had taken bcp & then had a m/c & in her own head she has associated the two.

I feel the same way. Not that I'd want 18, but one more would be great.

From what i understand outta it she got pregnant on the pill didn't know and continued to take it and lost the baby. Which i totally believe because if happened to me with my very first pregnancy before i had Isis. I got pregnant didn't know because my pills didn't make my periods regular they were all screwed up on them, so sometimes i would miss my period for a couple months at a time. Anyway i found out at 8 weeks when i went in for a pap and 2 weeks, i stopped taking the pill and 2 1.2 weeks later lost the baby. I blame depo for my other losses, i was supposed to go get my shot again Nov 1st, i decided not to as we were going to TTC(this was in 2007) i got pregnant right away but lost the baby early on, got pregnant again and lost the baby again. Then after a year went by and the depo was outta my system( it can take a year to 18 months for it to fully be gone), i finally got pregnant as you all know i lost that baby too but for reason not pertaining to the other 2 losses. So in a way i do believe that BCP and other forms or birth control are bad!

She's had 18 kids. If the rate of miscarriage is 30% give or take with each pregnancy, wasn't she pretty much almost bound to have a loss at some point? (I'm talking pure statistically speaking, of course I'd never wish it on someone or implying she should because she has so many kids) I know a lot of us would like to "blame" something, but the fact of the matter is that it happens all the time just because it does.

I have no idea about her situation...did she get pregnant while on it...or was she just saying the fact that she had taken it and it was in her system caused the miscarriage? Either way, I don't believe it probably did (but of course I'm no dr).

Honestly....I really hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I wish I had the facts earlier. If you look at the fine print on the paperwork that comes with the birth control, it is very possible to ovulate, and for the egg to fertilize with any type of birth control. It just makes your uterus as unfriendly as possible, thinning the lining an making it impossible for the egg to implant, causing what is in reality a very early miscarriage. If you have questions about it, visit the Natural Family Planning & FAM board ShawnaCAN has tons of great information about the issue.

Now that I have learned the facts about hormonal BC, I personally will NEVER use it again.

I think I would need to see her medical chart and talk to her doctor before I passed judgement on what caused her to lose a baby. I don't really feel like she has too many children either. She and her husband seem very thankful for their kids, they enjoy sending time with them and take very good care of them. They have even talked about raising such a large family and having no debt. I wish I could say I made such wise choices that I had no debt!! I think they have been very responsible with their large family and have provided a very stable home for them. I have a hard time juging someone that recognizes what blessings their children are. I hope they are able to have many more if that is what they want.

If she was on the bcp, didn't know she was pg and lost the baby, then I am okay with that statement. I know it can happen. However, if she was stating that because at some point in the past she had used bcp and lost a baby at a later date, then I may have to take issue. I was on bcp for 7 yrs and although it took a little bit for us to get pg with Tanith (which likely didn't have anything to do with the bcp) I had a totally healthy, textbook pregnancy with her. I haven't been on bcp for 3 years, so I doubt that after that long and a healthy pg it had anything to do with my loss.

I've watched and researched the Duggars for a while since they've been on TV...

They are VERY pro-life...completely anti-abortion...and after speaking to their doctor about hormonal BCPs after their miscarriage they learned the exact things as were stated earlier...that BCPs can still allow conception to occur...but it interferes with the implantation phase of pregnancy and in essence "causing" a miscarriage...but that comes down to the million dollar question...at what point does "life" begin?

I don't believe the Duggar's have ever placed a "blame" on anything/one when it came to their miscarriage...I think their BCP shpill is more a Pro-Life stance of things...and why they continue to have children and not use any type of BCP for a contraceptive...

I didn't even know they had a miscarriage.

I was on the pill when I got pregnant with Quinn, but I don't "blame" the pill for my loss.

I was going to say the same thing BCP causes abortions(the medical term for miscarriage) and can cause it every month you take them. They allow sperm and egg to meet, possibly implant, but causes the lining to shed, thus shedding the baby.
Its a matter of personal belief when life starts.
As for the Duggers I dont know about her loss...
But they claim to be quiverful (ie letting God determine the size our their family)
But I have have heard, she stops breastfeeding after 6 months so that she can get her cycles back and concieve again.. Dont know if its true though.

I think that they are fortunate to be able to conceive so easily and that they have only had one loss (statistically speaking). I wish they'd send out some of their baby dust!

But I don't think that birth control pills once you are off of them causes miscarriage. I was on BCP for over 10 years, as soon as I stopped I got pregnant with my son, I have been off birth control the majority of the time since I delivered and we just avoided that time of the month so we would not get pregnant, then we got pregnant after I was off BC for 6 months or more and that was the pregnancy I had a miscarriage with, go figure. BCP pills get out of your system 48 hours after you stop taking them, or something darn near close to that, which is why you can get pregnant for just missing 1-2 pills.

I've been through a lot of genetic counseling and I have been told the majority of miscarriages where pathology is done, the baby usually has significant chromosomal abnormalities.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw in what I know to share. Personally I would not listen to much advice Michelle has to offer on BCP as I don't see eye to eye with her on much else.
