Question about prenatal vitamins...

The last two pregnancies I was on Prenate DHA (prescription) and they were excellent. They even had stool softener in them and I didn't have any bouts with constipation.

On February 2 DH started a new job and it has that rule that insurance doesn't kick in until 90 days. So that is sometime in May. We are TTC and I really want to be taking prenatal vitmains. I only have 40 prenate DHA pills left and I want to save them until I would get a BFP. But, for me to take meanwhile, and to take in case I run out before I can get to the doctor...does anyone know of any adequate over-the-counter prenatals to take??? I can't imagine how expensive Prenate DHA vitamins are without insurance. His new insurance is EXCELLENT (once it kicks in); our old insurance was CRAPPY and our co-pay every month for the Prenate DHAs was $46.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Any vitamin is better than no vitamin, so I wouldn't think it would really matter. I just use a store brand. I compared labels to make sure I was getting the best overall. Maybe if you go a health food or supplement store they could help you with some suggestions?

My dr told me if I couldn't stomach th prenantals I could take flinstones along with folic acid 1mg. When I questioned him about the DHA I had heard you want to be on them.. He said not untill later in the third trimester and during breatfeeding.

I was given a bag of samples when I had my first appt. Since my m/c I am only on a daily multi vit and the folic acid.

I was told by my ob the folic acid is the most important while TTC.

I have been on prenatals since I was PG in Sept. My doc said to stay on them, with an extra supplement of iron, because of my anemia after the m/c. I ran out of samples and bought the One A Day Prenatals. They weren't that expensive, but, once I was PG they made me REAAALLLLYYYY nauseated. So, now I'm on some prescription samples from my doc to find out which ones don't make me sick. She said that a complete multivitamin with a folic acid supplement would be fine, for now, if the prenatals make me sick. So, you should be fine with whatever route you choose until the new insurance kicks in... just remember the folic acid!

I hear good things about Trader Joe's prenatals, if you have one in your state.

I'm taking Spring Valley Prenatals. I got them at walmart. It's 100 pills for $4.00. Here's the list of ingredients:

Vitamin A 4000 I.U.................50%
(100% as beta carotene)
Vitamin C 120mg...................200%
Vitamin D 400 I.U..................100%
Vitamin E 30 I.U....................100%
Thiamin (Vit B1) 1.8mg..........106%
Riboflanvin (Vit B2) 1.7 mg......85%
Niacin 20mg..........................100%
Vitamin B6 2.6mg..................104%
Folic Acid 800 mcg.................100%
Vitamin B12 8mcg.................100%
Calcium 200mg.......................15%
Iron 28mg.............................156%
Zinc 25mg.............................167%

I originally got them for the same reason. Dh had switched jobs so we didn't have insurance at the time. And i couldn't afford to spend $50 on prescription prenatals.
